The " last super" syndrome is quite normal . I think most people do it . What people ( Myself included) do not realize before being banded is that you will not have to give up that much food , you will just have to give up the QUANTITY and what you DO give up you replace w/ QUALITY food .

As for the pre op diet.

Picture this ,,,, Going in to the OR , expecting to wake up with a band, having been cut on and waking up with NO BAND . That is what will happen if you do not follow the pre op diet and you do not shrink your liver !! You will have gone through a Surgery for NOTHING !!!!! The pre op diet is hard, yes, its not easy , But its only for a short period of time, its not there to tourture you its there to help you not DIE !!!

The shrinking of the liver is for a reason . its to keep the liver out of the way so the surgeons can see , so they do not KNICK your liver and cause a MASSIVE infection .

IF that is NOT ENOUGH To keep you on track personally i do not know what will be . It was enough for me !!!

Suck it up and get through the next few days, have the surgery and follow the post op diet to a T and then enjoy the rest of your life skinny !!!!

I cheated on my preop diet. I still lost 15 pounds but didn't do what the doc told me. I read here that "lots" of people cheat and many don't have to do a diet so I wasn't worried. Well, I came to in recovery on 8/11 without the band because my liver was too thick and large for my doc to place the band. He said it was very rare. I followed his diet to the LETTER for 2 1/2 more weeks, lost 17 more pounds, and got my band 8/29.

SO I understand liking to eat. You don't get to be 405 w/out liking food. But, do what your doc says. Odds are you'll be ok even cheating, but what if you aren't? I wasn't. It is horrible to come to and be told "your liver was too fat, honey". Trust me. No "last supper" is worth that.

Listen to the ladies above. If you can't do the pre-op diet now, how are you going to do the postop diet later? You can do this. You really, really can. Catch yourself in your food fantasies and put them aside. Realize this is your chance to have the life you always wanted. You don't want to be turned away from it. You can do this!

You need to follow the pre op diet! If not you could wake up in recovery with no band. If you can not follow the diet you need to contact your doctor and maybe postpone your surgery until you are mentally prepared to go through with the necessary steps. This may sound harsh but believe me when I say, it is better to postpone than be cut open for nothing. My girlfriend didn't think she needed to follow the diet either and guess what, she didn't get the band.. her liver was to large. You can do it but if you are not mentally ready then my opinion is the band will not be the tool you need. And believe me when I say the band is a TOOL. You have to follow the rules even after being banded. I wish you luck.

I am on the pre-op diet as well although I feel pretty lucky because it is not solely liquid. I have been a real "B" to everyone around me the past couple of days. I have cheated a couple times in the first 2 days but I did it with sugar free Jello and sugar free popsicles. Now that I am on day 4 I don't feel the need anymore. The few first day are terribly hard but you do get to a point when you are not hungry. I honestly don't know what hunger is anymore. All these years I thought I was so hungry and now I realize that I wasn't. This has been a real eye opener. Just suffer through it...we are in the same situation. It does get easier! I have found that cooking helps pass the time for me...it is a strange feeling now to cook and know I don't get to eat it. I feel empowered! Try to find something to pass the time...it will help!

Good Luck!~

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
