Holy Protein Cow! Cottage Cheese!

Recommended Posts

:thumbup:I use cottage cheese a lot. I have two favorite recepies that I use a lot. One is to dice up an apple and add cinnamon and it tastes like apple pie filling. You can add splenda or any artifical sweetner if you like. I did at first but quit doing it as it tastes just as good without it.

The other one I haven't done for awhile, but you dice up tomatos, onions and green peppers to taste and mix it with cottage cheese. Very tasty.

I have never been on to be able to eat cottage cheese alone, but have been working on that since banding as it is such a good source of Protein. I remember mom making it with lime Jello and nuts also.

What brand of greek yogurt are you eating with 22g of proteing per serving? I'm eating fage single serving containers with 17 g of Protein because Oikos single serving containers do not have as much as fage. Please tell me which one you're eating. I want the 22g of Protein. I LOVE greek yogurt. I like it with 1-2 t of splenda with fresh berries and a little granola with added walnuts for additional protein. It's a great night time snack.< /div>

I was wrong! You are right it is more like 17 grams of Protein not 22!

Sorry!

I also have used Cottage cheese as a staple since my band. I absolutly love putting it on my lettace salad either with or without added meat. You can cut down on the amount of dressing you put on your salad also. I also put sliced pickled beets on that same salad.. WONDERFUL

I am now to where I am venturing out alittle and adding some starches.. I eat cottage cheese on a baked potato and then top it off with pace Pacante sauce...TRY IT.

One way that I got my Nieces and Nephews to eat Cottage chesse is to sprinkle the Season All or Lowerys Season Salt on it. Bacon bits is good also.

Like someone else said, you can use it instead of dressings... I put it into my tuna salad and chicken salad.

best of luck to all.

Lois

In addition to the CC and Gr Yogurt (yum), ricotta cheese is a whopper in the Protein department. It is whey protein so people who normally have difficulty with lactose may have better success with it. I eat it paired with fruit slices, or just a touch of splenda, or even SF Jello. If it is part of a meal rather than a sweet, I put veggies, particularly cukes and/or broccoli, but a couple of my friends - not even on diets - now love it too and say they put it with whatever they love. By the way, the Gr yogurt is good w/ a touch of splenda or a fruit as well. They are all awesome for Calcium too, so it is a double bonus to me!

If you whip it in the blender until smooth, it can act as a sour cream. thumbs up on the ricotta cheese. I actually like it better. Pour a 1/4 cup of prego sauce over it with a sprinkle of parmesan and it makes a nice lunch. Cottage cheese in sugar free Jello with fruit. YUM. Scoop out the center of a home grown Tomato. fill it with cottage cheese, salt, pepper, italian seasoning, sprinkle with parmesan and bake or broil it. Heavenly.

There is SO MUCH you can do with either of these cheeses!!! Baked apples with cottage cheese and cinnamon. 7 grain bread with steamed sliced apples on top spread with cottage cheese, splenda or turbinado sugar and apple pie spice. Broil for a few minutes.

Beat two eggs until fluffly and fold in a cup of ricotta cheese, 2 tbls. parmesan cheese, chopped spinach cooked, garlic powder, sweet basil and oregano and a bit of salt and pepper. Top with parmesan and a bit of mozzarella and put in the oven for about half an hour. It's wonderful!!!

:thumbup:One of my favorite meals is cottage cheese mixed with a very chunky salsa. Delicious!

Oh my gosh! That sounds good!

I LOVE Greek yogurt. Try the Fage brand. Lots of stores carry it. You can get various fruit flavors, as well as honey. The fruit comes in a little side compartment that you can mix as you choose, so you can use the amount that makes sense for you. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy cottage cheese is with dill weed and sliced cucumbers and cherry tomatoes to dip in it. If I'm feeling like something sweet, I'll mix slices of banana or canned pineapple.

In terms of Greek yogurt, I feel fortunate to live close to some really great grocery stores (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, PCC...) that offer healthier/organic/whole food-type options. I often will get a few containers of The Greek Gods brand yogurt, honey flavor. It's a nice alternative to other sugary sweets (can be a substitute for ice cream, especially if you stick a container in the freezer) I've tried other brands of the greek yogurt, but this is my favorite. Also makes a nice, light dressing (tzatziki) if you mix some of the plain greek yogurt with lemon juice, dill, garlic, cucumber, parsley, olive oil and a bit of pepper.

Ya'll make it sound so good, I wish I liked CC. I have tried it every kind of way, and just can't get myself to eat it.

The only way I like it, which I've yet to replicate.. my granny's lasagna uses cottage cheese instead of ricotta. I don't like lasagna, but I like pulling the noodles off and scraping the red sauce out.. and just eating the cottage cheese out of it.

I know it's mixed with egg, so some sort of baked cottage cheese & egg, but it picks up the flavor from the red sauce I guess... but I don't want the red sauce :)

I have to say that I used to HATE cottage cheese. Hate it. Now I really enjoy it and love the Protein and all, but I only eat it one way. With salsa. Everyone recommended to go the sweet route and add fruit, etc. and I still didn't like it. But someone else recommended salsa and I was amazed. I actually liked it! I really love it with pineapple Salsa from Target. Very yummy - low in fat and high in protein. Plus is is super easy and super quick - I love it for lunch when I am often busy and want something fast.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
