So, I've got another week on liquids and the only thing that I'm allowed that isn't sweet is broth or Tomato Soup... but I'm so sick of sweets. Whenever I drink a Protein shake, I literally get queezy feeling... any ideas? I've got some unflavored Protein powder from GNC but it's slimey and makes me wanna gag, so I can't use that...

I know I shouldn't be whining, but this is what I'm considering the bandster hell... that and the passing gas/bad breath... ugh! :rolleyes2:

Hi there.

Not sure if I am doing things the right way, and I certainly hope so. Was banded on Oct. 31st, and as you said, have one week to go on liquids..

Monday, speaking to my caseworker in Dr. Naim's office, she let me know that I can go to Soups, sugar free Jello and sugar free pudding and popsicles, and yogurt.

I am not big on sweets myself, but the Soup was good news. I went and bought 20 cans of soup. So here is how my day goes:

when I wake up: I drink a half EAS nutrition shake (strawberry cream)..this is the tastiest, less gross one i could find, and a small cup of juice

get to work and sip Water slowly in the morning. at lunch, fix a can of campbells soup (tomato or one of the cream of's). i mix a can of soup with a cup of milk for creaminess (not tomato)

I went to the 99 cent store and bought 4 strainers to dump my nuked soup into so the bits of chicken or potato are caught and dump them...now it gets good for me.

I am a sucker for lemon pepper. i love lemon pepper a LOT. so i add a couple squirts of lemon juice to the cream of chicken and a few shakes of Lawry's lemon pepper to it..the lemon juice you can find in the produce department..little plastic yellow bottle with a name like "Italia"...

I also add a few shots of the lemon juice and some pepper to the Tomato Soup. Gives it a nice taste.

Again, these are my ideas only and I wasn't coached on whether i should be doing this, so i am not doing the same. Just giving some tips on having a liquid diet not focused around Jello, pudding and popsicles.

Another thing I did, but I don't suggest this. If you go out to eat with friends or family, order the soup, but ask the waiter to strain it to keep objects out. Throw and extra couple dollars tip their way and they will have no problem doing this...I got a strange look from the guy at Chili's, but I explained and he was more than eager to help me out and make sure I had no little bits of food in my soup and was cream soup only.

Hope my tips help, and more important...hope my tips are not more harmful more than helpful. MAKE SURE you check with your surgeon's office before attempting anything I am describing doing.

If you are still on clears, chicken, beef or vegetable stock have flavour and should be on your list. If you have moved onto thick liquids, any of the "cream of" Soups should be allowed. The "chunky" style ones are ok too, if you blend them. As you move into mushies, you can leave off the blending. There are DOZENS of Soup varieties out there so, while soup itself gets a little old, you should always be able to find different flavours.

Thanks! Unfortunately, the only Soup my doc lists as "acceptable" in the liquid stage other than broth is tomato.... so, I've been afraid to try the other cream of ___ soups... I may have to call and ask... I'm getting queasy just thinking of more sweets.

I am not sure if your dr allows but I have tried the v8 Soups the brocoli and squash were good they are thin but could always thin them down more if needed they also have Tomato and roasted peppers they are between 90 and 140 calories a serving i think and I cant yet eat a whole serving oh and they are a serving of vegetables without a bunch of junk added to them

Bridgette I know your pain. When I'm hungry I want food. When I want a shake I want one from Sonic. On the pre and post op diets I was just never happy! It will be over soon! One thing I did that saved my life (once I could have creamy mushie stuff) is I took a can of split pea w/ham Soup and ran it through the food processor, then heated it with Water. OMG that was filling and wonderful.

Thanks guys!! I don't get it, I'm allowed to have low sugar yogurt right now as long as it doesn't have seeds or big chunks of fruit... what's the difference in that and cream Soups? ?

I believe it's digestibility. I didn't get yogurt until week 3 but I do know that when we eat anything that isn't liquid our stomachs churn to digest it. So it's not just an issue of getting stuck, (depending on your band) but more an issue of keeping the stomach still so that the band (and the sutures holding it there unless you have a realize band) will heal into place. That's the BIG reason it's important to follow your doc's post op directions...not to "learn" not to eat, or to prevent PB'ing. With bands other than the new AP (I don't know about realize) the "restriction" issues were (and are) more important in the early days post op. The new AP bands don't have as much immediate post op restriction (and that's good, you heal better and are less likely to have problems later. But man you get hungry!:eek:) but you do still need to keep that stomach STILL so it can all heal well. You risk erosion and/or slippage if you don't.

Smashing pumpkins is the name of the group of folks who were banded in October. :blink:

On a happy note... I figured out a way to eat what I'm supposed to and increase the Protein some... Last night I made Tomato Soup but instead of using Water to fix it, I used beef broth. It tripled the Protein amount per serving. Woohooo!!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
