Band tightening in flight?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon told me not to fly until my first fill because it is impossible to get all the air out of my port during surgery so during the first fill and every fill after that he assures there isnt any air in there.

You know...I'll be bringing my own Protein Shakes too while i'm on the plane to Dallas this weekend. My band is always tight on flights but for some reason (until this posting) I never realized it was because of the altitude. You guys are always a wealth of knowledge.

Hi all! I spoke to my doctor again today about flying. I had an appointment for an unfill on Friday before my flight but today she said that it would be okay to go without the unfill, it will only tighten slightly. She said we should be concerned if we are flying right after a fill because we wouldn't yet know how much restriction we have and then the band may tighten because of the flight and it might have been too tight.

Anyway, I'm going to take the chance. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for all the responses.

Hi Pattyann,

Yes, I think I had better keep it that way to. I had ask if I could have at least a small fill before I left Mexico and was told that "it was possible." I asked because I haven't been able to find a after care or fill

Well, I know some people do not feel any restriction until after a fill, but some of us DO, so it's possible you might not need one right away. I had every intention of getting a fill by this time (6 wks) but the truth is I am already restricted enough to have had 3 PBs. A piece of bread will just do me in. So do allow for the possibility that you might lose okay for awhile w/o the first fill. I plan to be far away from the PB experience before I get a fill. On the up side of being so distressingly uncomfortable--after a PB I don't even FEEL like eating for at least a day!

And isn't it AMAZING how different we all are in the area of restriction and fills?

Thanks Kare and everyone,

You'll have given me some good advice and I am going to take it. I am coming home with no fill.

Thanks,

Barbara

P.S. That is why I hang around here, for the advice and the laughs!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
