Hey everyone,

I have been on a liquid diet for since Oct-15, was recently banded on 10-29:thumbup:, and have the worst breath... OMG!:)

I understand the ketosis process and all that... but still it's horrible to walk around with your mouthwash everywhere, and not even wanting to speak.

My problem now is I got a white tongue, forget about dead taste buds. I am freaking out a little, is it dangerous, should I contact my Dr.

Anyone out there who's been through this situation?

Thanks,

Christina

Yep! It sucks! It goes away in a week or two. Thanks goodness I was out of work, until it subsided. I just had to deal with my family running the other direction when I opened my mouth! Hang in there! Tamara

I am right there with ya. Try the brush specifically for your tongue and breath strips help too. I will get better that's what I heard.

White tongue sounds like Thrush - I don't know if that's common after banding, (I haven't been banded yet) but I have had Thrush from antibiotics. I would say call your doctor and if you are allowed eat yogurt!

Basically the ketosis is caused because your diet is carb free.

Your body needs fuel to burn energy and since your not consuming carbs, its starts using the fat for fuel, that's why the drop loss can be so dramatic.

anyways, while burning that fat, the fat contains acetone and that is what STINKS. Short version.

Good luck

thank goodness. i thought i was the only one with the breath problem. i usually complain to my husband about him, but he said something to me for the first time after I brushed my teeth!! I am mortified and am constantly eating gum (i know I am not supposed to but it not like I am giong to swallow it!) So, our breath smells because we arent eating carbs? I was banded on 10-23 and I just started Soups and potatoes. what is everyone else eating?

I had the Death Breath as well. Since we aren't suppose to chew gum, I wasn't sure how to deal with it. Then I came across breath strips. You can usually find them in the gum section. The are small enough to carry around and work magic. Since they dissolve in the mouth - no Band worries, like gum!

Oh yes....nasty. My kids called me "breath vador" - that bad. It's been 2 weeks since I have been banded, and I can finally see the difference. My tongue is no longer pasty; I think the Soups make a difference. I am starting mushy food tomorrow! Yeah!!!! I can't wait.

I've had it too... and it's nasty! My body is making some of the nastiest smells (both ends!) ever in history! I'm so glad I'm not working, I'd be mortified for anyone other than DH to smell it. He comes home and wonders why I have a candle burning everyday... well, he wouldn't want to be around if it werent!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
