Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

My Doc has me on a 2- week liquid pre-op diet.. 2 Protein shakes a day and then a low carb dinner.

Since my orginal band date was 10/08 i went through the "Pre-OP" diet stage :smile2:

My Menu was:

B-Atkins shake

L- Atkins shake

D- Grilled chicken or Salmon with steamed veggies.

Now I get to do it all over again day after Thanksgiving!

I am on low carb (at my own discretion) for about three weeks right now, and then ten days before surgery all Clear Liquids only, no sugar but I can have 3 Protein Shakes a day that aren't clear during that time, but they have to be thick.

:smile2:

My per-op starts Dec 3rd. 1st week i get 2 Protein Drinks a day and a lean cusine (300 cal. or less). then the 2nd week I go to 4 drinks a day. All the SF popsicles, Jello and broth I want for the 2 week period. Its very interesting how the diets vary! I'm not looking forward to it at all.

I wasn't even given a pre-op diet, I met with the surgeon for the last time on Friday, and asked about that, he said nothing. Now reading all these posts, I may think about putting myself on a regimented pre-op diet. Any suggestions would be quite helpful!

Atkins shake at Breakfast

Low Carb snack

Atkins shake at lunch

Low Carb snack

Low Carb Hight Protien dinner

That is the basics of my pre-op diet. Because of my high BMI my surgeon instructed me to be on this diet for 3 weeks prior to surgery. So I am well into it. Actual diet attached.

My surgery is Dec 3rd. I have been on preop diet for 1 week. I was having a Protein shake for breakfast, a piece of fruit between, then another drink for lunch or some plain tuna, then another piece of fruit between lunch and dinner. For dinner I usually had a small meal with either a piece of chicken, fish or very lean meat. With it I had 2 veggies and of course alot of fluids. I will tell you that after the first morning I wanted to kill and would have eaten my left arm if it wouldnt hurt. It was hard until the 3rd day and then I just got used to it I guess. I am hungry but not crazy hungry. I was going to call my doctor and beg him to let me eat more food but I held out. I wanted to be strong about it because I know its the start of my new life and its a change we have to make. We are all doing this for the same reasons. We all have the same problem with food and have to learn to live a different life for our prolonged life. I start my all liquid diet tomorrow for the last wek before my date and I am sure it will be rocky but I will do this!!!

Thank god I found this site or I dont know if I could handle this alone. I have great support with my wife and kids but reading these stories and talking to people who are experiencing all the same things is beneficial. It takes the edge off. I wish everyone good luck and just keep believing you can do this!!

gmechile - I would definately put yourself on a pre-op diet. It will make it much easier on your surgeon and yourself if you shrink your liver down. Without a preop diet your liver will be normal size, which from my understanding, is too big for the surgery. It'll be in the way and has a greater chance of getting damaged (cut, etc.).

I'm so surprised that he doesn't have you on a preop diet. I'm reading a Gastric Band book right now and that even talks about the importance of the preop diet.

I started my pre-op yesterday and boy is this tough. I get 3 Protein Shakes and as much broth Jello and popsicles I can eat. People at work who don't know think I've gone crazy! hahaha

Thanks Pete! I'm booked for the 30th of this month (yes, a quiet New Year!) in Durban South Africa and I've been searching the net for EXACTLY this diet for literally weeks. Thank you so much for sharing it!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
