Emotional eating..

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have my appointment with the bariatric coordinator this month. I hope after that things go much quicker. I still need to attend a support group, get a letter from my PCP stating they support my decision, take the psych eval and nutritional consult, and then talk to the doc. I have all my paperwork ready to go. My question is this though. Due to Aunt Flo, I caught myself twice this week eating when I wasn't hungry. I also know I tend to be an emotional eater. So, I am nervous now that if I can eat when I am not hungry now, then how in the heck can I be successful with the band if I don't get this under control? I really, really am at my wits end with being obese my entire life and I just don't want to fail at this too. I also work from home as a transcriptionist, so food is ALWAYS available. I really need some guidance and reassurance too.

Thank you so much and thank you for reading my post.

You just won't physically be able to eat like you used to. So you might find that when you become emotional you end up doing something else, maybe have a plan. I was a big time emotional eater and when I was bored I ate or celebrating, any excuse for me. Even though I have only been banded two months and don't have a great deal of restriction compared to others I am eating about 1/5 of what I used to eat. You'll be fine.

I think many of us are emotional eaters! I learned with other weight loss attmepts I had to have something else to "use" when I was upset or bored. Finding this is something only you can do because it has to calm you so you can resist eating. I have some self hypnosis downloads which help me and I have fully committed to eating only 3 times a day. This is one success strategy the dietcian I worked with stressed and it really does work for me. I no longer snack. I eat three meals a day and that is it! Most days this is fine and on days when it is not I find myself using the techniques I practice in self hypnosis. I think you are being smart identifying this issue before you have surgery but please don't think it means you cannot succeed. Good luck.

Hey

I am in the same boat as you. I eat for every reason but hunger  I also work out of my home. I have decided if working from home is too hard then i will start to work outside the home for awhile. I also saw someone about my eating before surgery and got a name from the dietitian for a group in my area who works with eating issues should i need them after...............my hope is that i will have all my ducks lined up ahead of time in case i need them. Good Luck with your journey. I am getting my band in like 8 days !!!!!!!!

I hate to be a downer but for me I am still an emotional eater. Alot of the time I can eat as much as I use to. I don't do it as often as before though. I plan on going to my doctor and getting his recommendation on who I should go see. For me the band was a great help in weight loss. I just want to figure out the food demons before they sabotage me again. Good Luck to you

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
