I was 31! I wish I would have done it sooner! In my 20s, so I couldve enjoyed the 20s more! But watch out 30s, here I come! LOL!

I was 57 when I got it done and would have gotten it done in my 20's if it was available. It has been the best decision I've ever made...

Hi, I am new here and have an appointment to see a surgen next week, I live in california, and I am 51. I am wondering if anyone knows exactly how long do you have to wait to be banded after insurance says yes?

Hi Anel,

My experience was that as soon as my health plan approved it, I had some pre-op stuff to do (appts with nutritionist and psych eval) then two info sesssions (one in a group, one solo with the surgeon) and then I was scheduled. My process was fairly fast, though - about 3 months from start to surgery date. I have heard of others needing 6 months to get through all the hoops - it really depends.

Stay strong, be proactive (as much as possible) and it will happen for you!

First of all, Welcome!

Once you are approved and you have all of your pre-op requirements met (tests, classes, diet etc.) then you can have the surgery. I got my approval in the mail and after doing a short happy dance, immediately called my surgeons office and recieved my surgery date. I had to give myself time to get a few more tests and start the pre-op liquid diet so I was scheduled to be banded about two weeks later. There is usually an expiration date for your approval but they typically give you at least a couple months. From start (attending the seminar) to finish (surgery) it was just over a month. My insurance did not require much though.

I was 59 and had decided I was not going into my 6th decade as fat and unhealthy as I have been all my life. I've known about the band for several years and knew only one other person who had it done. She has failed at it, so until I met several others with success that I seriously considered being banded. That and like I said, the concept of turning 60 and not changing anything in my life. I am so happy  I took the leap!

I was 54 when I got the band. I do wish I had done it sooner. I had a friend who had it done years ago and never lost any weight, so I thought it didn't work.

I finally met someone else who was really successful and realized that maybe it could work for me.

I chose fifties but was actually banded a few days before turned 50. Was my big 5-0 present to myself. Best present ever!

I was 30, I don't wish I had done it sooner because I don't think I would have had the mind set and the discipline it takes to succeed with the band when I was in my 20s.

Hi, everyone, I was 27 and I am 30 now - would of done it sooner, if I had found out about it. I actually found out about it 1 week and had the surgery 2 weeks later.. I was sure this was going to work..Thankfully it did, from a size 16 to a size 8, from 243 lbs to 144... almost 3 years later.. I would do it all over again..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
