Typically Me... Gaining Weight on a Liquid Diet?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, it's great to be here! ~

I was just banded on Oct 29 by Dr. Chalk in Everett, WA, self pay, I drove up from Vancouver, Canada. Okay, so my question - I lost 7lbs on a week long liquid diet just prior to the surgery (for the liver shrinking)... but since the surgery, I've put on 5lbs - please somebody tell me this is normal! I've barely been eating/slurping/drinking anything - was constipated for about 6 days until I got some milk of magnesia down me today (fun & games & I can't believe Im talking about this 'in public' so to speak :rolleyes2:). In case people think I'm eating/slurping the wrong things, please believe me when I tell you that Im just having thin small amounts of Soup, crystal light, Water, sugar free popsicles, Jello, yogurt drinks, and thats it.... anybody's feedback would be soooo appreciated.

Cheers, A.

Gosh that must be so frustrating!! I had to self-pay for my band too so I sympathize! I did not gain weight on the liquid diet so I don't really know if it's normal or not but the only thing I could think of was to mention to be really careful about stuff that's loaded with sodium because I know I dissolved a 5 calorie veggie bouillon cube one time and noticed that it had over 800 grams of sodium. If you lost 5 lbs before the surgery...it was probably Water weight and sodium can put that back on in a heartbeat probably plus some. Just a suggestion! Sorry I wish I had more info for you.

It is Fluid weight. They pump so much fluid into you during surgery. I think most people came out of surgery weighing at least 5 pounds more than they did when they went in. It will take a few days, but it will go back down. Unfortunately, when you start mushies, it will go up again slightly or your weight loss will plateau for a little while. Either way, it is expected. Just keep doing what your doctor said, and you will be ok. Good luck!

Hi sailorgirl,

Omg your diet sounded like mine post op:

lots of crystal light and / or Water

sugar free popsicles (yummy!!)

Skinny cow fudge pops

gross Bariatric Advantage shakes

yogurt

Jello pudding and Jello cups

tea

instant chicken soup/ instant grits/ instant polenta

I purposefully didn't weigh myself for the first few days I post surgery because I felt so bloated and gassy I thought for sure I couldn't have lost weight.....You're doing great with the program, and please continue on your course and add a little walking or moving around when you feel up to it....you will get there

I'm almost 3 weeks out and have lost a total of 15 pounds....some days I look like I gain a few and then I'm back down a little later....we're all so different, but it's a great feeling to know that you CAN lost weight......7 pounds in a week is amazing!!!

Btw, I was self pay too.

Thanks so much for the words of encouragement! I got out there walking today & I'm not giving up for anything.... so in the long run, the numbers can eventually only go the direction I point them in, right!

Cheers, A

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
