Hello from Washington, State that is...

Recommended Posts

I thought that I would make my first official post today.

First off, my scheduled surgery date is Nov. 21, 2008. I am excited to begin my journey to a new me, but to be honest, I have always been comfortable with the old me, at least I have been comfortable with my weight and how I looked. However, I always knew that being obese just was not healthy for the long haul.

So after many years of just being the "Big Guy", I decided to make the serious changes for a heathier me. Now after nearly a year of internet research and talking to people, I feel that I have made a great choice towards the new me. I am so looking forward to having more energy and stamina, and of all things, jumping higher (I love to play volleyball):smile2:.

My long term goal is to lose 95 pounds. Anything over 70 would still be great though. I look forward to browsing the forums and gathering the wisdom from those who have gone before me, and to start participating in this great support structure.

Randy

Thanks for the welcome everyone....:rolleyes2:

I am working with Dr. Peter Billings @ Puget Sound Surgical Center. So far, it has been a very pleasant experience working with them, especially the patient coordinators.

So, I have a few questions.

1) Have you expereinced the "Last Supper" feelings before the pre-op diet?

2) What have you done to stay motivated during the pre-op diet?

3) what kind of "Up's" and Down's" have you experienced leading up to the surgery.

Thanks

I had done weight watchers several months before surgery. I just limited the sweets or treats I wanted so really didn't have the feeling that I needed to go out and eat all the food I wasn't gonna be able to eat anymore . I was scared that I wasn't going to get off the weight my doc required. Start watching what you eat early if you can. Try your best to limit your over eating. Don't beat yourself up if you make a mistake.

I think the hardest thing for me was the wait for the surgery day and how much pain I was gonna be in afterwards.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
