well Deejay. dont digress I am on a Liquid Protein diet until my surgery on July 26th. :cry I am 4 days into it and I am so wanting to CHEW something. I would love to bite into anything at this point. :) Egg,sausage, cheese. I am going to see if i can drink some broth to give myself a change. I am drinking vanilla and chocolate Protein Shakes now.:sick

Please dont be discouraged. You can do it and you will do it. I keep telling myself that if I dont eat this or that (what ever it is I am craveing) that I will be that much closer to my goal.:sleep I have even resorted to going to bed earlier as i can't eat in my sleep. I have tried distracting myself with chores that need to be done and going outside. My apt has never been cleaner and I am getting a nice tan from hanging out in the swimming pool. We are all in this together so dont worry about sounding whiney. We will all have our moments.:banana

Keep your chin up.

Hey DeeJay and BeautifulTina,

Keep your chins up (no pun intended). Before banding, my doctor put me on an Optifast diet - similar to slimfast, except it tastes worse and you have it for three meals. Was on that for 4 weeks and honestly, it was horrid. But when I went in for surgery, my liver wasn't as fatty and I didn't have to do an open surgery, so it was all worth it.

The first few weeks pre and post op aren't fun - but they're necessary and don't last long. You'll be on good normal solids again before ya know it :)

I guess what throws me about the low carb before surgery is after surgery I will be required to eat "mushies" which included oatmeal, cream of wheat, mash potatoes which are all "carbs". I believe I am going thru refined carb withdrawal right now....my head feels like it is full of marbles and everytime they hit the side it hurts. I may try what you guys are doing with the high Protein shakes at least for one meal a day....maybe that will help....what kind of high Protein Shakes are you all drinking.....do they have sugar in them icon5.gificon5.gif

Thanks for the support...it is really hard for me to post...I'm kind of shy...however I don't have anyone I can talk to so thanks so much....

I am useing a Protein Powder called Pro Rated i have the alpine vanilla flavor. It is sweetened with splenda. It has 4 carbs per serving. It has 22 gm of Protein per serving. It tastes good by itself. I am told that you can add stuff to it to give it more flavor like orange fat free Jello powder to make it taste like a orange dreamcicle. I have yet to try that so I will let you know how it goes. I got the powder at costco. It was located near the pharmacy. It was only $20 for a huge 6 pound tub of it.

The chocolate one i am trying is called Advant Edge..it is ok... very syrup-ie sweet tasting. it only has 13 gm of protein and has 22 gm of sugar!!OUCH I perfer the pro Rated one. They offer a chocolate one too but I have only purchased the vanilla to date.

I think i can chew gum to satisfy my need to chew. Going to try and get a hold of a friend who had it done to see what she was told.

Best of luck and dont feel shy..this is my first day on here and I feel like I am talking up a storm. I wish that people would actually go to the chat room to talk too. Every time I have gone in there I am the only one there~~~ no fun talking to yourself.

HI, I am reading a lot here that most pre-op diets are liquid. My dr. just has me on low carb, with 10 grams of fat a day, and 30 carbs, and at least 70 Protein. I am on day two. My surgery is Jun 16. I am panicking on what to eat though. My eating habits are equivalent to a teenager, and I am 45. Hence the weight problem. My meals have been a Protein Drink, or chicken with veggies. I feel HUNGRY!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
