Hello Everyone!!

My name is Riane, and I am 23 years old. I am from southern NJ. I currently weigh 226lbs and am 5'3". Which makes my BMI 40.0 (morbid obesity). I have been battling my weight as long as i can remember. I have done, Atkins, Weight Watchers, Michael Thurman's Extreme Body Makeover, Grapefruit Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, you name it.. as well as I have been perscribed Phentermine (a diet pill, that made me grind my teeth constantly and have a VERY rapid HR. 116 resting). I lost weight on Phentermine but felt the side effects were too risky. When i went off of the Phentermine I gained the weight back. I was told 2 years ago i was a good canidate for Gastric Bypass. When I looked up the proceedure i felt it was too risky. I have since then met someone who had Lap Band done. She looks fantastic, and feels even better. She said she would recommend it to anyone. I think this may be key for me. I am only interested in losing like 91-106lbs. Do you think this could be the key for me? Oh yeah- I called my insurance company, they cover it. If I get it, it would be in Cherry Hill NJ-Dr. Gus J. Slotman.

I look forward to your response!

Thanks for taking the time to read my shortened life story! :)

HI Riane,

I also have tried all those diets lost but then gained it all back. I have been in the process for 3 months and have a surgery date of November 10th.

I also looked at gastric, but was a little afraid of it, but did like the idea of fast weight loss!! But with the lap band they say the average is 2 lbs a week, which is the healthy way to lose weight. I also would like to lose 100 lbs. I've lost 27 lbs so far and am on my liquid diet for two weeks before surgery and can't wait to really get started.

Good luck and I'm sure you will be able to do it!

Thanks so much for your reply! It means a lot. How long is the process before the surgery? I know there are like psych consults and such... Like from the time your insurance accepts you? Is it a long wait because the surgeon is busy, or because there are many things that need to be done and addressed before hand?

How is the liquid diet going for you? Is it as difficult as it sounds? I can only assume you feel hungry all the time..

Good luck and God bless on your journey! I hope to be there too one day (sooner than later)!!

Sure i can well u gotta do thoese two tests before u can even try to get a approval from your insurance .. the abdominal ultrasound basically yea to see how youur liveer is and if everything is normal or u got anything in it.. and the upper gi series its kinda harder cuase they make u drink this yuckie thing lol thats just to make sure everything u get in your stomach goes in good they take pics of it.. Just hold your nose and drink it dont think about how its gonna taste its not that bad just a little chalky not really that bad and after those are done and hopefully its good u can then try your insurance .

not all insurances require the ultrasound and upper GI. I didnt have either one of those so it just depends on your insurance and sometime your doctors requirments.

riane - have you gone to the seminar for your surgeon yet? most of the time they will tell you what they require and what is required by your insurance.

Good luck to all of you on the journey to being banded...its was the best decision I made!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
