Health Savings Accounts

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if when you put money into an HSA, can you use it for your adjustments? I know the uses have to jive with what the government says you can use it for. Is this an approved expense? I would ask my insurance company, but if the procedure doesn't have a code I don't know if they will even know.

This is a interesting question. I didn't know there were certain restrictions on what you could use it for. I assumed that I could use it for anything medically related. I've been using mine over the past few months for my fills. I hope its allowed. Let me know what you find out....

Thanks for asking this question; I do not have an answer, however we are coming up on our open season - I am hoping that with the many questions I need answers to, I can remember to ask this one! This would be of great assistance to me. If I get an answer within the next couple of weeks - I'll post it.

Take care

If your doctor codes your fills as an office visit, your insurance should pay for it. That's what one surgeon I looked into did.

I recently found out there are different types of HSA with different rules.

Health Spending Accounts

I have a FSA and fills would be covered because it's a doctor's visit. But Health Savings Accounts have different rules that I'm not familiar with so I don't know if they would count:

U.S. Treasury - Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)

I did mean an FSA not an HSA. They have to cover what the federal government tells them to. Does anyone know if this is a covered expense?

The surgery? Yes. I used my FSA for mine.

my insurance didnt pay for any of my surgery but i had $3000 in my hsa account so i wrote myself a check from that account and cashed it and paid it towards my surgery... no problems yet!!! i am sure you can use it you just need to make sure you get a recipet as documentation that it involved a doctors office.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
