Hello everyone!

Well, this is a little scary...I have never posted on an on-line forum before. I am scheduled for my surgery November 7th at the Surgical Weight Loss Centre in Mississauga. Dr. Cobourn will be doing my surgery. I am very nervous/excited--as I am sure many of you can relate.

I am really struggling with the Optifast...some days are better than others. I generally do well during the day, while I am at work and distracted. But the evenings...especially if my husband is at work...those times are tough. I feel like I am the only one who has struggled with the Optifast, that everyone else had the willpower enough to not eat food during this time (after all, it's not that long of a time...). Why is this so hard?

I am SO interested in hearing about other experiences, and am sure I will be on this board frequently!

Thanks for reading,

Anne

Don't think you are alone. I had surgery 1 year ago and yes it is so hard to stick to liquids only before surgery. I was a snackaholic =) and the night time was the worst. I put a paper on my frig with the date of my surgery in huge black bold print to remind myself each time I felt the urge. I know it is hard now but you can push through it. It will be worth it in the end.

I added A LOT of ice to mine and blended it so I felt like I was eating more than I really was!!! It sucked so bad though, but so worth it in the end . You're definatly not alone...It'll be done before you know it :) Try picking up a hobby for when you're hungry...I started crocheting and painting whenever my brain felt hungry lol...

Hi again, and thanks for the encouraging responses! A few more days have passed, and as the surgery gets closer, the easier I am finding it to stick with the Optifast. Basically, I am terrified of the surgeon not being able to proceed b/c of fatty liver. Sometimes, a little fear is a good motivator!

Well, thanks again to those posters who wrote back. See you on the banded side!

Best of luck!!!!!!

Hi pattikay! Thanks for writing! You cheer me on and I'll cheer you on too! Did you see there is a group for November 2008 Bandsters? I am not totally sure how I ended up there (well, I clicked on a link in a post, hopefully I can figure how to get there directly...), but it seems great. Let me know if you find the group. And good luck on November 5th, I will keep you in my thoughts that day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
