Made my mom cry

Recommended Posts

My mom absolutely was against it at first...because she was thinking actual by-pass surgery. Once I educated her on it and she got to see a video of it, she is now all for it and VERY proud of my progress. Now she's concerned I'm losing too much! Well, that just comes from her used to seeing me overweight for 40yrs!

Aw, mom's do that. My mom bawled before I went in for my c/sections and not because she was happy, she was just worried about me. My mom is worried too, and I'm sure she'll cry, but she knows how much I've fought with this my entire life and is just greatful for the procedure. She'll be ok.

When I told my mom I was going to get banded (in Mexico), she cried. I feel awful, but know this is what i want and need. Has anyone had this problem? Any advice??

Bless her heart. She's so concerned for you. All these years of her watching you suffer (and her feeling a tad guilty) ...you are now taking action.

My sister freaked when I told her I was getting banded. And then when I told her it was Mexico, she got on the next plane and went with me. She's a nurse and was going to 'protect' me. She got me to bring a former Marine along as an escort to 'protect us'.

hahahah so funny! Things were so much on the up and up that my sister is even considering having her surgery down there!

And our escort, after the first day said we really didn't need him.

So, just hug your mom. She understands and is so proud of you!

My mother became so fearful I ended up having to tell her I changed my mind, and didn't tell her until 5 weeks after I had surgery. I went home for Christmas and had lost over 20 pounds. When I told her and she could visibly SEE that I was healthier, looked better, felt better, and was SAFE, she was okay with it. I felt bad for making her worry needlessly. she's older (late 60s and has health issues) and I didn't want her fretting like that. Same for my Dad. They are THRILLED with the results now.

Where I'm thinking of going is 7500 US, in Canada it's easily 18-20,000.. obviously Mexico is cheaper - even with the exchange rate flights etc...

18-20,000 in Canada?! :smile2: Where do you live?! In BC you can get it done for $14,000.

An alternate suggestion would be to check out Dr.Kirschenbaum in Denver, CO - I believe he is approx $9,000 and has done MANY MANY bands.

I'm still going to get the band, she will be supportive either way - but she cried :) , just wondering if ppl had anything to say about Mexico or the experience in general - I want to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly

As long as you do your research and know you are going to a good doctor there is no problem with going to Mexico. Just follow basic guidelines, don't have surgery in a clinic... only go to a hospital. Don't go to someone that sends you to a hotel for recovery, stick with someone who keeps you in a hospital for two nights after surgery. You don't need to be sitting in a hotel in TJ after surgery. Go to someone who does a barium swallow after surgery AND sends you home with the films. Go to someone who sends you home with all your lab results, chest xray films, barium swallow films, EKG, etc.

Go to someone experienced with a good track record. Don't go to one of the butchers, stick with someone who is great. Don't fall for someone who sells you on charisma but skill instead. There is one TJ doc that is just a horror but he's really nice so people go to him. Be careful of who you go to regardless of country.

I've seen people post here about going to the US or MX and they just love the doc they are planning on going to. If you ask them the stats of their doc they don't have any idea. Ask them if they use a hospital or clinic, inpatient or outpatient, number of bands placed, which bands, etc., they have no clue. But he's sooooo nice and apparently that makes him a skilled surgeon. Don't fall for that.

Right now the going rate in MX for the good doctors is $7K. I went to MX twice, once for a band and once for a revision to a sleeve (I'm not cut out for a band) and I only wanted to go to my MX doctor. But I know his track record and I know his stats. He's great. Point being, I did my research. You need to do the same and find the right doctor for you.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
