insurance denial....AFTER the band!!

Recommended Posts

This should be no surprise to me since I work for an insurance company. My DH and I applied for a major medical plan with his new job. Of course the agent wanted his cut so he assured me I would be covered since being banded....WRONG!!! Got a denial ltr today saying I was denied because of my Lapband for weight loss...but my family could still be covered...even DH with a higher premium due to his "tobacco use and build"...as stated in the ltr!!

GO AMERICAN REPUBLIC....you're the best!!!!

??? You are no longer eligible for health insurance because you have had lap band surgery?

that is interesting.

DH and i were both denied *yet went self pay* with BCBS of TX well over a yr ago. when open enrollment for his company came around last Nov (after we were both banded) we were able to choose UHC, which we had prior to BCBS TX - no issues.

that is truly unfortunate to be denied a benefit, that - that ins didn't have to pay for that will improve your health. i hope your able to find a proper ins policy that doesn't crush you financially!!!

Wow, that's stupid! Sounds like a terrible insurance company. I guess they're worried about any liability if something goes wrong with the band. Plus not wanting to pay for fills.

It was for a personal policy, underwritten. You're ok if you go with a group policy...but if you don't work for a company that offers grp insurance, and you try to get a personal policy...then you're out of luck...esp if it's underwritten for pre-x conditions!!! They didn't even bother ridering it...just flat-out denied me!!! Luckily my DH's boss is now looking into some grp policies because they denied hima nd his family too due to their health issues. Still, American Repulic DOES SUCK!!!

That is really common, especially for a private policy. I'm not sure why that is, you are a better risk for the ins co thin than fat so I don't get their thinking.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
