Hello everyone. This is my first time on and I am wondering if any one else beside me have lost lots of hair? I will be 2 yrs out on the 25 of Jan. 2009 and lost 65 lbs. I always had a full head of hair and it was in the middle of my back. Now it is very thin and almost at the top of my shoulders. Any one have any suggestions? I decided, my hair does not like this foreign object in my body. Of course I had two surgery back to back (one on the 25 and the other on the 26) but still it has been almost 2 years.

cjean- losing lots of hair is one of the side effects of the lapband. (not all, go through this, however, seek a nutritionist for this problem. Its the rapid weight loss you are experiencing.) Nutritionist will put you back on track.

Hope I helped and eased your anxiety.

hair loss is a side effect of weightloss...not just the band.

So, those with the band can and probably will lose hair, too.

I've been on maintenance since January and I still lose more hair in the shower than normal.

I am not banded yet but will be on November 7th, 2008; however I do have thyroid diease and one of my issues is Hair loss when my meds are not working correct. I take 1500 mcg daily of Biotin when helps me retain my hair. I agree check with your nutritionist and see if maybe Biotin will work for you.:)

I asked my docotor about Biotin. He said if your hair loss is caused by lack of Biotin and B-Vitamins then it will help. He said most of his patients get hairloss due to not getting enough Protein. And some due to not getting enough other nutrients like B-Vitamins. Either way, taking both Biotin and extra Protein along with your daily Vitamins won't hurt either way. I still take biotin because it has really made my hair and my nails much nicer.

There are also those whose bodies go into shock from the surgery and thier bodies stop taking car of non-essential things like hair. In this case your body eventually recovers and so does your hair.

Hi,

Google "telogen hair loss" and you will get a lot of good info. In short, it can be caused by the stress of surgery(s), or most other pronounced stresses on the body- physical or emotional. You may feel better consulting with a dermatologist. Zinc tablets and zinc shampoos are commonly used. For bandsters, consider low intake of Protein as a cause, or perhaps medications? I think I'm having some of it and my surgery was 4 months ago. It often starts about 2 months after surgery. Consider a check of your thyroid and other metobolic conditions- that is why the MD appt is good. Good luck!

Great information. I had my surgery on june 30th and started having more and more Hair loss the last month or so. I don't know why i didn't put the two together, but now i know i definitely need more Protein. Thanks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
