I thought the same thing after my surgery. I asked the dr and he said it was ok. Now, its one of the only things I can eat w/o feeling any restriction.

Of course I would say do what your doctor tells you to do. popcorn is on my list of foods to avoid. Do you have any foods that you are not supposed to eat or you can eat whatever you want?? Good luck to you. Becky

i don't have a list yet...i have no restriction yet..so i feel like the band is pointless for me right now, i am sure that once the restriction kicks in it will be a different situation! I have eaten most things, and so far nothing bothers me at all....(actually the pain from being hungry hurts....but that is it!)

LShelly,

I was told not to eat popcorn and it has been almost 3 years. It really has something to do with the kernels. I ws even told not to eat hotdogs also becuase of the skin. I have found skinless hotdogs so I eat those.

You really need to get with your doctor to tell you what you should and should not eat with his experience in which he has only learned from his other patients.

They are only able to tell you from experiences that they have heard from us. We are the trial and error patients.

WOW - Amazing how doctors doing this same procedure can have different guidelines. I also had my band placed on Oct 17th and am still on the liquid only stage. Mushies come next this Friday (31st) for a week and then GRADUALLY can re-introduce solid foods.

I honestly don't think I could eat much of anything right now. A couple of Protein shakes each day, a container of yogurt and a cup of chicken broth - along with all the Water I need to get down - and I'm good to go.

Just hard to understand all the differences, but I always believe you should go with the doctor you are paying!!!

Good luck everyone!!!!

I was given a list of foods that some people have trouble with but was told that didn't mean that I couldn't eat them, just that I should be careful and know that I may not be able to tolerate them.

The list included: bread, popcorn, ground beef, shrimp, asparagus, celery, broccoli....these are off the top of my head and I know there are other items that are not listed here. But I have tried most of the items-some are no problem at all while others are more difficult. Also my tolerance of certain foods changes with my restriction, when I am tighter I can't eat them. But for the most part, when I take small bites, chew well and eat slowly I can handle all of them.

The only absolute no-no for me (doctors orders) was carbonated drinks.

Unless your doctor says otherwise, just take it slowly with popcorn (or any other food) and see how you do.

I wasn't told to avoid popcorn, by my surgeon. The only things I was told to avoid was carbonated beverages. I was told to be careful with liquid calories, like ice cream, chocolate, etc, since they go right through the band, and won't help keep you full. I personally do eat popcorn, and find I have no problems with it. I do have problems eating most breads though.

I don't have to eat all that much popcorn before I feel like I've had enough though. No huge bowl of it for me anymore! I love my band!

I have been eating popcorn with no problems at all. Unless the food such as- carbonated beverages- really are dangerous it's really up to each person. I'd be lost without my popcorn and Shrinlin is right it doesn't take much to fill you up and it's really satisfying.Shrinklin is also correct about the liquid calories, in the long run they'll hurt you more because you can consume them without even noticing the fat, calories ect. They also don't help you with learning to eat slower with is so important to being able to enjoy a larger variety of foods. Sorry I got off track, try the popcorn just take it slow. It takes some time to see what each person can handle.

By all means follow your doctors orders, and definitely ask.

I myself have been able to eat popcorn in small amounts, chewing it very well, without any problems.

I have eaten popcorn at the movie theater, dangit I just can't resist it! I eat only about 1/4 of what I used to. I have, on occasion, gotten REALLY bad pains in my side after eating it.

Also, you may find that you don't enjoy it as much as before. All of the chewing kind of takes away the enjoyment of it. Mushy popcorn isn't as good as half-chewed popcorn.:)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
