Post Op Diet Grocery List?

Recommended Posts

I have surgery wednesday (yay!). Anyway, I don't know what to buy at the grocery store. Can anyone write down a laundry list of the stuff they bought in preperation? My lap band workbook from the doctor is really general. I am on liquids for two weeks post op. So should I make a lot Protein shakes? I am just confused and not sure what to do.

Thanks in advance!

I'm having surgery a week from Wednesday! :) I'm going shopping this weekend!! Here's what's on my list:

Day 1-2 Clear Liquids

apple juice

sf Jello cups

sf popsicles

sf hard candies (to possibly curb sweet cravings)

sf mints (to help with bad breath)

ff chicken broth

tea bags

splenda packets

Day 3-14 Full Liquids

various flavors of crystal light

EAS low-carb Protein drinks

ff milk

various flavors of Protein powder

sf pudding

sf hot chocolate

V8 juice

grits

cream of wheat

creamy Soups (tomato, cream of broccoli)

Also on my list, items that are non-food:

liquid tylenol

gas-x strips

Hope that helps! If anyone has other ideas, let me know. The menu for the first two weeks is looking sort of grim, haha.

Gracie - that is great you are getting ready for your surgery. I did the same thing - but did you doctor not tell you what you can and cann't have? As you read on this site every doctor has his/her own diet plan - so I would really check with your doctor.

Good luck!

My doctor gave me a very generic diet plan - so I wanted to see more specifics of what people eat. liquid can mean a lot of things and that is basically what I have on my list. "Liquid Protein shake." "Liquid Oatmeal." "Liquid Cream Soup."

Get the dissolving Gas X stripes! They come in cinnamon and they really do help. I got fudgesicles, pudding, Jello, crystal light, carnation instant Breakfast, I also used the little broth packets out of Ramen noodles! Basically anything that will turn to liquid in your mouth. I didn't get any suck candies because they added a lot of gas making pain...everyone is different though  Congrats and good luck!!!

Super help. I thought I had to be on clear liquids for a week and I am ready to kill someone!!

Your doctor may want you on clear liquids for a week, so don't just move to full liquids without checking with him! One thing I've learned on LBT - every doctor is different with his pre-op and post-op diets. It's kinda bad if you ask me. You'd think if everyone was putting in the same band, they'd have the same Before and After Care.

Thanks Jmegirl :) I think they all have different diets but I have to be honest, I am just finding out what is working for me. So far so good, not throwing up... Hope everyone is feeling well!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
