Questions after two months of banding...

Recommended Posts

I have had my third fill and finally feel restriction. Lately, one month after that fill, I have episodes of feeling extremely ill, with a pain that radiates into my jaw, followed by strong vomiting. Most of the time I eat slowly, chew well, and have no problem. I have lost about 21 pounds in 10 weeks, which seems slow. Is this normal, and is the thick mucus during a blockage normal. I will bring up a lot of that if I get stuck. Also, what does "pb" mean??? Thanks

The mucus you are talking about is called "slime". It is extra saliva that our bodies, in its infinite wisdom, produce to try to unstick food. PBing is what you are doing when you are bringing the food back up with this saliva. It is not really considered normal to do this very often. You may be too tight, if it is occurring even if you are eating slowly and chewing really well.

Do you notice if it is always with certain foods? If so, just cut these foods out and see if the episodes stop. If it is happening with foods that should be ok, then maybe you need a slight unfill.

You don't want to start eating "slider" foods because you don't pb on them. That is not a good way to go. It would be better to be slightly loose than to turn to undesirable food choices, just because they are easy to keep down.

About the pain radiating to your jaw...sounds not too good. You should probably call your doctor about that. That could be a sign of something not band related.

"Most of the time"? I think that may be part of your problem; eat slowly and chew well (and no liquid per your doc's instructions) at every meal. Like the other poster said, if certain foods still give you trouble, avoid those foods! My doctor says avoid them for a few months, then try them again.

21 pounds in 10 weeks is 2.1 pounds a week. Since I think most of us are told to expect 1-2 pounds a week average loss, you are .1 each week ahead of the game.

And I agree with the other poster, that mucus is called "slime" in band world but it is your body providing lubricant to move the offending bolus of food either up or down, anywhere but where it is hung. PB means, in bandster-speak, "Productive burp" which is when you burp up a bite or chunk of undigested food that is stuck.

I agree, also, with the "check with your doctor" thing, about all of it. When in doubt, that's what s/he's there for, to provide you with solid medical advice!

Good luck!

I SECOND THAT!!!

Pain radiating up to your jaw accompanied by vomiting can be serious. Please, please promise to call your doctor first thing in the morning. If it happens again before then, go to the emergency room.

We may not know each other, but we're all in this together and we care about you!!!! Keep us posted!

As for loosing 21 pounds it seems to be normal. I have been banded for 3 months and lost 16 pounds so far. PB, I don't know what that means, sorry. I get my third fill this week.

Thanks for all the advice and answers to my questions. I'll email my dr. tonight, and be sure to cut out the offensive foods and also chew everything really well.

What did your doctor say? That jaw pain has me worried.:)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
