Ever wondered how much you pee in a day?

Recommended Posts

My doctor wants me to take a cortisol test, and that's measured through urine output. So I have to pee into a container for 24 hours -- it looks awfully small to me and I'm wondering if I'll fill it up! We'll see.

It's pretty gross to open up the refrigerator and see it sitting there. Blech.

The last sentence was TMI, but do keep us posted about the cortisol test and why you are taking it. I hear stress can increase cortisol. If your cortisol is too high, you might want to stay away from the political threads... even being a sideline observer raises my blood pressure so I had to unsubscribe to those threads.

LOL! It's in an orange bottle and my dh JUST said: "I don't know what bothers me more: the fact that there's pee in the 'fridge, or the fact that when I open the door I think, 'Oh look! Orange juice!'" LOL!

I have a lot of general malaise issues (I don't sleep well at night but I did a sleep study and I just barely don't qualify for apnea or restless leg; I have all of the classic symptoms of a thyroid issue but always test well within normal on thyroid function tests); the doctor is running a full panel of everything to see if he can figure out how to "fix" me. I can't stay away from politics, though -- it doesn't raise my blood pressure -- politics is IN my blood

Had to laugh...

I did a similar test many years ago only I was to do it over 2 days...they gave me a plastic gas can to use...and I almost filled it. I always have drank a LOT of Water...this has been the easiest part of the band life style for me!!

Gadget, please post what you find out. I have always been curious about this and yet far too much of a squeamish princess to set about and collect my own piss. In fact, one of the reasons I don't like babies and very young children is that you have to clean 'em. Ugh! sez me. But a guy I used to work with pointed out that if I live long enough I will be changing my own diapers. Ugh! sez me.

Off Topic - I think bodily functions are gross, too. EXCEPTION - I never thought my children's secretions were gross or stinky when they were infants. Moms just think their kids sh*t don't stink.

"Plastic gas can" is a great description. I called about 1/2 way through the day to ask what I did if I filled the container. They said, "most people don't fill it." Yes, but what if I do? "Oh, most people don't." OK, but what if I do? She got off the "party line" a bit and said, "Do you really think you will?" (Duh. Why do you think I'm asking over and over again?) Yes, I do. I picked up another container. Good thing, because I went over. Poor Donna: don't read this. I "produced" about 3400ml.

It's not that tough. The container has a very wide opening. The most difficult part is that, because you store it in the refrigerator, the container itself gets very cold. Then you pull it out and put it between your legs and {shiver} it's no fun. I would suggest, if you're going to do it, to do it in summer. It's probably very refreshing. ;)

I had to do a similar collection at least twice while pregnant for some pre-eclampsia test. You think your DH's comment about the "orange juice" was bad. I was working full time and had to store mine in the breakroom fridge. It was a small office and we would often have a pitcher of lemonade in the fridge. I did not enjoy having to forewarn everone that this was NOT lemonade. I ended up "hiding" it behind a sheet of cardboard.

My cortisol was completely within range, so there's nothing wrong with my adrenal glands. The only thing the accompanying blood tests showed was that my Iron storage Protein was totally depleted. I'm not anemic, just borderline anemic, but I have zero Iron storage so I need to get myself on iron. Blech.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
