Obama’s birth...where really??

Pennsylvania's former deputy attorney general and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter Philip J. Berg has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Pennsylvania accusing presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama of lying about his U.S. citizenship, which would make him ineligible to be president.

Mr. Berg is one of a faction of Clinton supporters who haven't heeded the party's call for unity, filing the suit just days before the opening of the Democratic National Convention, which will nominate Mr. Obama as the party's presidential candidate.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia last week, also names the Democratic National Committee and the Federal Election Commission and says Mr. Obama..s mother went to Kenya late in her pregnancy and ended up giving birth there. It also claims that later in life, Mr. Obama declared himself a citizen of Indonesia.

Fight the Smears: The Truth About Barack?s Birth Certificate

I've been following this story for a while. It sounds a bit "off" to me, but I just don't know. I'm not a big conspiracy theorist. There is a second lawsuit being filed (or has been filed) in Washington state, and I've heard about a third potential suit as well. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. It seems to me if Obama just produced the document to the court, the suit would be over. Other than obstinance (or not having the document), I can't understand why he doesn't.

Again, while I'm not convinced on this issue, I don't think an Obama website will necessarily provide the information "true believers" (or disbelievers, as it were) are requesting. It seems to me Obama can squash the rumors (if they are rumors) by just producing the documents for Berg's suit.

I made a pledge, and I will keep it. I will not get into political debate.

But if somehow, after 2 years, anyone can really believe that they can just find some legal ineligibility for Obama or McCain to be president, then your voter registration should take away on the grounds that you have some form of mental retardation.

With that said, and not saying anything negative about any candidate, I vote that we move on to some reasonable discussion.

My son was born in Japan while we were stationed there in 2005 (military)- does that make him Japanese?

Nope. I was born in Germany (on a military base) and have always had US citizenship. The same question was raised about McCain because he was born in Panama (on a military base); he produced his birth certificate and the issue died in its tracks.

The issue is a Constitutional one, and while again it seems far-fetched to me, it's something Obama could squash fairly easily by producing his birth certificate.

Yeah, I was kidding- although I get asked that question constantly (does he have dual citizenship? is he japanese? did you name him after the character in harry potter?). He has a US birth certificate and a US passport.

That website had a copy of Obama's birth certificate- saying he was born in Hawaii.

There were questions about the document number being blacked out, the seal not being there, whether the document was created in Adobe, the borders of the document not matching, and the characterization of his father's race, among other things. I'm sure Berg took these things into consideration before filing his suit (he is, after all, a Democrat).

I don't want to be in the position anymore of defending something I don't necessarily believe in so that's all I'm going to say on the matter. We'll just see how it plays out in court. My sense is it will die a slow death, but, again, production of the documents to the court in which the case was filed could squelch it immediately.

As an aside, on the "born outside of the US" issue, in the 1980's I traveled with my family (parents and two brothers) to East Germany. Going through the checkpoint, I was the first in line. They looked at my passport and let me through immediately. But they stopped and detained the rest of my family for about 20 minutes (a little freaky for a teenaged girl now in East Germany waiting for them!). I've always wondered if it was because my passport indicated that I was born in Germany.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Did you name him "Voldemort"?

No, but it was on our short list.

No, we named him Seamus. And what amazes me is the people who assume we're HUGE Harry Potter fans and that's why we picked the name. 1. No, we're not huge fans- my husband likes the books, I couldn't get into them and 2. if we were huge fans, why would we name him after a minor character instead of, y'know, Harry or Ronald or something?

re: "I vote that we move on to some reasonable discussion. "

....you're hoping for 'reasonable' in a political thread? HAR!!!!

It's spooky when people believe everything that comes in their email.

I was born in Hawaii. And it wasn't even a state when I was born there. But I'm a US citizen.

Oh and my birth certificate looks just like that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
