Hello, I am a newbie!!

Recommended Posts

I am a 35 yr old mother of 3, and very happily married. I haven't been myslef in about 6 yrs.. since the weight has been creepy up.. I had heard of lap-band 2 yrs ago and thought I could lose this on my own. Then we found out I have RA. so certain exercises, almost all, hurt my joints. I have been very concerned about recovery time and how it will affect my household... I know I am always thinking of everyone but me. I stumbled upon this site and am looking for some HONEST INPUT!! These seminars seem to forget to tell you all the "good stuff". one of my bff's had it last year and she said no one told her she would be eating monday, then starve on tuessday!! so I just want omake sure I am making the right decision!! thanks for any input....

You'll get lots of honest input here. Check out the General Support Forum, the Complications forum and the Post-op Forum and see what kinds of things people go through. It's very enlightening.

Hi and welcome! I'm new here too and have a lot of the same feelings you do. I'm worried about my recovery time and how I'll manage my kids. I don't want them to have to suffer because of me. I'm sure we'll get through it some how. Good luck in your journey.

Thanks for easing my brain a bit. I'm sure my kids will help me, but their idea of cooking is spaghettios or hot pockets. I think I'll rely on the crock pot a lot to feed them because I'll want as little contact as possible preparing food in the first days.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
