Drinking after eating

Recommended Posts

This part has been really hard for me. I have always been a big drinker especially after meals but fortunately it was always Water. I was never into soda or sugary drinks. When I go out and the waitress asks me if I want more to drink I tell her no. She always refills it anyway and says "just in case". I want to just throw the drink at her since if it's in front of me, I will drink it. I make it a point to drink the whole thing down before I even put food in my mouth but I am still craving a sip of water afterwards. I know this is a big no, no with the band. Who else is having problems with this? What are some tips to help me control this?

Hi ~ I've only been banded a little over 5 weeks, so don't have alot to offer other than........... I drink right up until the time I eat (my surgeon allows this), at which point I place my glass out of reach from myself. If the waitress did not respect my "no thank you" when she offered more, I would politely ask her to please remove the glass from the table, as I am on a restricted diet that does not allow fluids with/after my meal. Remember, you are the customer... and more importantly.... YOU are in control of your destiny.

Have a great day!

Are you waiting 30 mins between your last drink and your meal? I don't have a hard time with drinking while eating, but I too like to drink before and after I eat.

If the problem is only when you eat out, tell them you don't want a drink and insist they don't leave one in front of you.

It is OK to have a sip of Water after you eat, just not to drink any measurable amount.

For me, I chew gum to moisten my mouth after I eat. I have seen on here where many folks say their doctor's don't allow gum. I can't imagine doing this without it. I use it when my mouth is bored, when I'm thirsty and can't drink, when I'm sleepy and need to stay awake. I love gum and have no less than 4 different varieties on my desk at any given time. LOL

Not drinking before and after your meals does take adjusting. I too would always drink with my meals. Not now, I've pretty much got that under control. Unless I eat something spicy. Then I have to a sip of Water. But I don't drink. Remember to stop drinking 30-60 min. before a meal and not to start drinking again until 60 mins. after. It really does make a difference.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
