New Gal from Mass!

Hi everyone-

I have recently started researching the lap band, and I feel this is the right choice for me. I am 27 yrs old, and pretty much have been obese my whole life. Like most of you, when I say I have done everything I have. I have gained and lost 80lbs a few times, took the pills, joined the groups and such. I remember being 7 yrs old and going to kiddie weight watchers. I am a nurse by trade and have done my research, and even spoke with collegues of mine. I am going to a orientation next month at Umass weight center and also have a appt with another surgeon that seems highly recommended. I have seen my pcp, and I have my referral in place. Spoke with my insurance and they do cover bariatric surgery as long as I fit into the criteria. I want to know if anyone has some words of wisdom and almost what to expect. I am nervous, but I just feel so ready for this at the same time. I feel this will all be worth it! Thanks, hope to talk more with you all

Hi JoJo. It sounds to me like you are pretty wise already. You have done your research and know your history. I hope you breeze right through the approval process - you will be banded before you know it. Finding a doctor that you feel comfortable with is very important, as is following the exact instructions that they give you. Once I had made the decision to get the band, I was never nervous... just VERY excited. Another tip is keep visiting this site and ask ANY question that comes into your mind. There are lots of nice people here who will help you in your journey. Keep me posted and let me know if there is anything I can do to help you. Becky

Welcome to another person from MA. I am north of Boston and had my lapband at Lahey Clinic in Burlington in August. I am doing well, slow but sure and I am really getting used to it now. Feeling more comfortable eating different things. Not much bothers me. I hop to go for my second fill in a few weeks.

Heard good things about U of Mass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
