Hair loss after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced significant hair shedding after the band?

I started "shedding" about two months ago - it peaked significantly about a month ago and it's tapered off a bit but I'm freaked out. My hair is noticably thinner and almost to the point that I've seriously considered looking at a wig.

My doctor didn't seem all that concerned, even though I was nearly in tears sitting in her office. She gave some recommendations for supplements and instructed me to try Rogaine if I wanted. Lastly, she assured me that my hair would regrow in 6-9 months. Ugh!

Meanwhile, I feel pretty unfeminine and am wondering if it's better to be thinner and balding or fat with a nice head of hair.

Anyone else going through or have been through this? :)

Hello! You are not alone! I posted a few days ago about this same thing. My hair is starting to shed as of recently. Your body is adjusting to the difference of nutrients. Up your Protein if possible. Mine has been falling out gradually...its a part of the process, as your body adjusts, the hair will come back. It sucks, but its just a hurdle in the race to a longer life. Try Biotin. It is a supplement that not only supports hair and nail strength, but also metabolism, so its a win win for us!! Any other questions I am here for you!

Josh

I tried the Biotin, but had mega side effects. Maybe I started off with too much. I think it was Biotin 5000. Should I be taking a small dose to begin?

Thanks,

jazie

During the preop seminar I attended my surgeon (he's the greatest) addressed hair loss. He said (and I'm paraphrasing but this is the gist of it) EVERYONE has thinning hair about 3-6 months out (some sooner) Apparently supplements (like biotin), Vitamins, or extra Protein and other interventions do not help it. It seems to be caused by the trauma of surgery. He said EVERYONE has had his/her hair grow back fine(as thick or thicker) and in his years (over 1000+ patients) of practice the only person who needed a wig was a lady who owned a wig shop.

So I'm just going to wait it out, not buy supplements, and keep my money for smaller clothes!

As long as you're getting your Protein in and taking a Vitamin per your doctor's order (whatever s/he said to do) you'll be fine.

Actually the Biotin and supplements do help. Yes, you are bound to lose hair around 3 months out, as I am 3 months out and losing some hair...BUT...the supplements in biotin, along with taking a daily Vitamin and getting in your Protein, WILL HELP in AIDING your hair come back. It is not a magic pill, what it does it SUPPORTS the positive regrowth of strong, healthy hair. And as for the other post, Biotin 5000 is a pretty heavy dose, I would recommend Biotin 1000, one pill a day. It has helped me tremendously.

I am just getting over it now. I took a supplement called hair, Skin and Nails. I've bought it at Walmart and the local grocery store. It has 3000MCG of Biotin along with other hair friendly supplements. I also upped my Protein. Not only has it helped my hairloss but my hair is healthier and my nails look amazing!

Now I just have to wait for my hair to fill back in. I have baby-fine hair so the Hair loss is so noticable. I was using the Pantene and the Dove volume shampoos. They do make your hair look a little thicker But then I bought Nexxus Sublime Volume Conditioner and that has really helped to hide the thinning. It is a little pricey for my budget so I Shampoo with the Dove volume products first then use just a little dab of the Nexxus conditioner and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I style with Aussie Volume styling products. I also gave up my straight do and added curls to give it a little more volume. I am noticing new growth so I have not given up hope!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
