How quick to surgery????

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I posted here before when I started this journey and I have made significant progress since then.

I finally completed the six month monitored diet by my PCP required by BC/BS of Michigan (PPO/Community Blue).

I have already had my psych eval and now the Barix Clinic Insurance team is closing out my file to send it down to my surgeon Dr.Nunn.

My question to the community is what are the next steps and how long do you think it will take me to get a surgery date?

Also on a side note has anyone had Dr. Andre Nunn from the Barix Clinic in Ypsilanti, MI as his or her surgeon? If so how did you like him?

Thank you in advance for any info. All your stories are very courageous and inspiring. Thank you for helping me keep the faith.

Hello detroitgirl:

I have BC/BS NetValue HMO Hills Physicians in California. Every insurance is different, because of employer policies. I also had to do the 6-month monitored diet and pysch eval prior. After I completed that, I was approved by the insurance to meet the surgeon.

The surgeon at the hospital that I go too, requires that we attend an orientation class, a pre-op support class, and a nutrition class, at their clinic. These three requirements at the surgeons office must be completed prior to getting an appointment with the surgeon.

Once you meet the surgeon at the hospital I go to and depending on what type of WLS you are having, there are several tests that must be completed. I will be banded, so I was required to have an upper GI and a H-pylori test. (I already completed these).

Once we get all the test results back, the surgeon drafts a report and recommendation for the insurance. Then hopefully the insurance will approve it quickly. I am waiting for the test results to be submitted to my surgeon.

There is a possibility that I might have surgery in November, but it looks more like December. I am also required to lose 10% of my total body weight....not excess weight...but total body weight.

Again every insurance is different and every surgeon has their own requirements. Good luck with the process.:D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
