Looking for a quality, accurate scale...

Recommended Posts

...I purchased a new Health-O-Meter scale 2 months ago and, quite frankly, its a piece of crap. There was a 6 lb. difference in a period of 30 minutes this morning when I got on and last week my son "lost" 17 lbs. in 3 days. Does anyone know what kind of scales the doctors use or recommened one that is accurate?

What you need is a balance beam scale like they have in many doctor's offices. The nice thing about a balance beam scale is that you can adjust it to make sure it is right with a screwdriver right on the side. They are a bit costly. Detecto or Health o Meter scales can be bought on the internet with free shipping for around $185. I got mine cheaper on ebay but it is a gross color of green. Turns out it was military surplus. But it works great.

I just bought a Tanita scale from Target a few months ago and I love it. It's digital, it reads to 0.10 of a pound, and it can tell you bodyfat and hydration percentages. Honestly, I don't use it for that, but the scale rocks. When I weigh in at the surgeon they use Tanita, too. A tip- don't put it near the bathtub or shower where it can get wet or splashed. My husband ruined my first one :tongue2:

Good luck finding one you like!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
