Future Bandster needs some help....

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was wondering if I could get some ideas of medications, supplies, clothing, that I am going to need for my surgery and after I come home. Also a list of things to do and not to do

Thanks!

Wear loose, easy to get into clothing to surgery. Wear shoes that you can slip on. Bring a pillow that you can press against you abdomin during the ride home.

At home, have loose clothing to wear. A nightgown or house dress is great for around the house, anything with a waistband will rub your incisions. Make sure you arrange to have all of your prescriptions picked up. I received pain medication, anti-nausea medication and antacid medication prescriptions and my husband ran out and got them for me right away. I set myself up on the sofa with pillows to prop me up, all of medication and drinks within reach. I also had my GasX ready. Have a non-stimulant laxitive on hand incase you need it. Bending and reaching can be painful so I found that a pair of tongs can be quite handy.

MyNewLife - I see that you are also using Dr. Martinez. That's who I'm scheduled with. When is your surgery date? Mine is 11/13/08. Do you have anyone lined up for fills and aftercare? I don't yet. Got to start working on that soon.

Good luck,

Elaine

Gas-X strips for sure. I also bought some liquid tylenol and Aleve (naproxin) gel caps that I've been poking a hole in and draining a couple in the dose of tylenol.

The med. that I was given at the surgery place was a liquid blend of acetaminophin and naproxen so I figure I'm pretty much duplicating that with my home concoction lol. I still have some of what they gave me too though. I also bought some anti-scarring cream and butterfly strips.

I had surgery last Friday and back to work on yesterday so I can't hang out in my lounging clothes but as soon as I walk in the door after work, off goes the bra that's for sure!

I had a really easy time with it actually. No nasea or anything. I went shopping for stuff the monday that I was home and actually did some gardening. I could have gone in to work but wth, I'd already taken the day off!

LanieB...My surgery is November the 14th. I will be there on the 13th for my test....I would love to see you there! I see that you are from Bossier. I am from Lufkin and I actually have Dr. Merriman from Shreveport lined up for my fills. I am really excited and cant wait !

Carrie - My husband and I are both flying in on 11/12/08. We're both having the surgery on the 13th. Maybe we'll see you there. He called Dr. Merriman's office to see about having our fills there, but they didn't seem very optimistic about us using them, for some reason. Said they take patients on a case by case basis. Plus there was going to be a fee of about $400 for each of us for the support group (or something), and another $200 for the actual fills. That's kinda steep if you ask me, especially since it would be for each of us. Anyway, we're looking for somewhere else that's not quite as expensive.

Elaine,

Yes I hope we do see your there. My sister and brother-in-law are coming with me for support and his mother is coming as well to get the surgery. I am sorry to hear about Dr. Merriman's office, but to be honest with you the $400.00 was not so bad to me. I have called within about a 150 mile Radius and can not find ANYONE who will take patients from Mexico. There was a Doctor in the Houston/Conroe area that wanted $2000.00 just for the fact that I was not banded by him. I has been really frustrating finding a fill doctor. I wish you the best of luck. Im not sure how far you are from Tyler but there is a doctor that is in the Tyler area every other week end that does fills for $200.00 a fill. I will try to find her number, but she goes by Dr. Stephanie.

Carrie - Yes, if you can get her number, that would be great. I told my husband that next week's task is for him to get us lined up with someone to do our fills. lol! Dr. Martinez's office emailed us a list of a few that they recommend, but we haven't called any of them yet. I think the closest was in Austin, which is quite a drive! Tyler sounds much better.

Elaine,

I found Dr. Stephanies Number...Her phone number is 903-520-8847. I hope this helps! Her husband will most likely talk to you. Ask him to send you her information in regards to diet, and fills via Email. It is really good info. If not, I still have it and I can send to you. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
