Hello. I am a newbie to banding, I had it done last Thursday 10/9/08 and I am a newbie to this site. I am not on solid foods yet, but I am wondering what types of carbs can you eat when you get to solid foods? I know Pasta is out white bread, is rice out as well? I love brown rice but do not know if I can have that? If someone could give me some ideas on what they have ate for carbs.. I would grately appreciate it. :-)

Thanks Jennifer

There's a difference between things you will physically be able to eat, and things that are good choices for weight loss. Lots of people can't eat white bread (unless it's toasted) but lots of others can. Our nutritionist told us if we wanted Pasta to make sure it's well cooked, not "al dente" because she said it continues to swell in our pouches if not well cooked. Some can't eat rice, some can.

Diet wise, you should follow your Doctor's guidelines, I'd think. They are all different. Mine requires 3 meals a day, NO Snacks EVER, and to eat Protein, then veggies, then fruit, and finally If room to eat Pasta, bread, grains, etc.

But as to what you physcially CAN eat with the band...that will depend in large part on you, how tight your band is, etc etc. I've "met" bandsters here who literally can eat anything including popcorn etc. And some have trouble with many foods. You'll just need to see how the dust clears for you, and follow a diet to promote weight loss that you can live with!

And of course like you said, while you're healing it's best to follow your doc's guidelines to the letter. Very important for the band to heal!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
