Anyone with a slipped band?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm having severe pain and reflux 2 weeks after surgery. I've read that this might be a sign of a slipped band. I'm looking to hear from anyone who may have had their band slip and if so, what were their symptoms and how do they fix it?

I also have to admit that I didn't eat right after my 1 week post op doctor appointment. At one week they gave me the green light to eat softer foods - not mushy but soft, canned meats like tuna or over cooked Pasta. I was really craving "chewing" some foods so I think I may have not eaten the right things for a couple of days and I probably ate a more like a 1 cup of food instead of 1/2 of a cup. Could eating like this for a couple of days cause your band to slip?

I'm going to the doctor in the morning and should know for sure but I'm scared!!! I just won't be able to face it if my band has slipped and my carelessness or lack of discipline was the cause of it. Help!

Yes, unfortunately eating wrong early on can cause the band to slip. Not saying that's what happened to you! But that's why they have us on restricted diets post op. I hope it isn't but your best bet is to go get checked out!

I would be very surprised if your band had slipped through eating the wrong foods! They do stitch it in you know!

I have just suffered from a slipped band but this was caused by my band being overfilled by a good 3/4 mils! They had to operate to re-position the band.

Sounds to me your band is too tight and probably could do with unfilling a little? Did they fill it during the op? You have to remember that post-op your stomach is very fragile and it could just be that it is not liking the excessive amount and the nature of the foods you are eating.

Don't panic just yet though. Let us know how you get on after your doc appt.

Good luck.

When you had the operation, did they have to cut you like regular surgeries or did they do it laparosscopically?

Just curious.

I went to the dr this morning and thank goodness it's not a slipped band. Apparently some people react to having this "foreign" port inside their body differently. Sometimes a wall of tissue forms around the port, very inflamed, and can retain Fluid. This is what happened to me. They did an xray and simply drained the fluid from inside this tissue that was causing so much pain. It seems crazy that simple extra fluid could make me feel like that. So basically I had just a lot of extra, inflamed tissue and pressure from this fluid. I felt a lot of relief once he drained it but I'm still sore from this inflamed tissue. He said that this ususally subsides after a couple weeks. I'm just so glad it wasn't a slipped band! Thanks for the encouraging words...

Speck, when talking with my Dr over what we expected to be a slipped band, he said it would be laproscopic surgery to repair a slip.

Mine ended up being a twisted intestine, nothing wrong with my band at all---but since we thought it was.....we discussed it!!

So what did they do for your twisted intestine? I thought I was out of the woods since they drained that Fluid from me but my pain has only progressively gotten worse. What were your symptoms of a twisted intestine and how did you fix it?

In my case, they operated, and were able to manipulate the intestine without resecting it.

I had a stomach virus, and vomited, thought I had either slipped or prolapsed my band because I could not eat or drink anything that stayed down.....nothing!

I dehydrated, and had to be hospitalized for fluids, my abdomen became rigid, and the morning of the surgery I had begun to again run a low grade fever. I had pain.....but it was not localized to the area of the kink----although it was more pronounced in that area, and since surgery the recovery pain has most definitely been in that area. Prior to surgery I was COLD all the time, I shook--like shivering from cold, was told that was shock. I lost weight quickly....and generally felt terrible, I hurt, and was scared I was going to lose my band!

In the end, I had the surgery, recovery has been kind of slow since I was in poor condition going into the surgery, not healthy as is preferred for surgeries! But I am back to eating, and processing food, feel great, have put back on some of the weight, and am VERY thankful, that my band was not my issue!!!

My advice is NEVER, EVER wait like I did. Nothing is worth putting off your health for!!!

Better to know than to wonder and worry anyway......lesson learned!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
