SLIME?? Anybody??

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 weeks out from surgery and 1 week out from first fill. Definitely feel more restriction and have begun losing weight again. Problem though, after one or two bites I throw up cups of saliva/mucous. I call it the SLIME. Doesn't happen every meal or every day - but pretty often. Asked my aftercare specialist and she though it might be related to sinus drainage/allergies.

Anybody else have this reaction? Any suggestions??

Thanks!

Yup. I think the official term for it is sliming.

It happens to me if I eat too fast. Try slowing down a bit between bites and make sure those bites are tiny. When I slowed down and made sure that I was eating tiny bites my sliming went away.

Best wishes.

Sue

You are probably eating too fast, your bites are too big or you are not chewing enough. Or maybe you are just really tight ( I am tight in the morning still tight but looser at lunch time and fine in the evenings) What happens is that the food gets stuck and your body produces mucus to try and dislodge the food. The mucus then backs up into your mouth. I have slimed a few times trying to swallow pills that were too big.

Slow Down! Cut your food pieces into size of thumb nail divided into 4. Try counting your chews 15-20 EACH. Try not talking and eating at th same time. This seem to happen to me everytime I had a fill. liquids 2 days , mushy again for 2 days, then on day 6 or 7 I had to remind myself this is chunky food, slow down and chew. This too shal pass. but I am 9 months out and it has happened like clock work after each fill, So I write it in my food journal, on the day I get regular food again to watch day 6/7. We live and learn and re train ourselves the right way , hopefully hang in there. Love my band. down 61 lbs had 6fills now at 6.5 cc ina 10cc band.Good luck keep it going.

That is good to hear ... i had few eposides like this when i went to food and now i had a fill and so back to liquids ,,, apart from the pain that is caused immediately and the unpleasantness of it all ... does it harm the ring ? i also can not eat anything for several hours after i slim ... is that the norm ?

Yes, I get this too when I eat too fast or too much. Its like my mouth fills with this thick saliva that is gross to swallow, so I spit it out. After a few spews and thumping my chest, I'm usually better. Walking helps get my stomach feeling comfortable again too. A nurse friend of mine said that this is a form of reflux? It doesn't taste bad or acidy, so it doesn't seem like what I know of reflux. I know that frequent acid reflux will damage your esophogus. Anyone know if this is the same thing?

Blund, It could be called a form of reflux, since the mucous is supposed to be going down, but it hits a log jam and comes back up. It doesn't contain stomach acid though so it's not the same effect as regular reflux which can burn your esophagus, it's basicly just saliva. Most say the food is getting stuck in the band when this happens, but to me it feels like it's getting stuck in the sphincter at the end of the esophagus/top of the stomach, but maybe that's just me.

This has happened to me twice now, both times were on the first bite I took after not eating for several hours. It's like my stomach spasms on that first bite. Once I slime for a while the little bits of chewed food come back up and I'm fine. It's never a large enough chunk to have actually been stuck, which makes me wonder if it is a spasm, at least for me. I've learned to take my first bite and wait a few minutes to be sure it's ok before continuing.

Question about the sliming...when someone slimes do you feel sick while you are doing it? Is it like throwing up and you heave a little or is it just thick saliva that is in your mouth you are just spitting out because its too gross to swallow? I haven't had it happen to me but am scheduled for my first fill soon and trying to mentally prepare.

It is nothing like throwing up. You feel stuck when it is happening but you are not gagging or wretching like when you vomit. The slime comes up on its own and you can feel the it oozing up from your stomach into your throat...I always want to try and swallow hard to get it to go down but it never works. You have to spit it out and it is very thick and hard to spit out completely...Not pleasant at all.

I had a horrible month with that problem. Anytime I ate something solid, I would slime...I went back and they took some of my saline out and I have not had one problem with it.. I go back next week and they will refill it, butt I think that I will have them add only 1 cc instead of 2 cc. I did learn to go slow, eat smaller bites, and pay attention to what I was eating. Good luck!!

OK, I've been MIA for a while. So busy with school & 3 little ones!

My sliming is like Lauralee describes. (Now I've met 2 people in my life named Lauralee!!!) Anyway, I talked to my Dr about it, and he said it really isn't true reflux because its not acidic and bad tasting.....like Lauralee said. But it is clear and too gross & thick to swallow!

I am just barely starting to STOP and THINK before I eat. Then I can purpously chew a lot and eat slowly! But man, how long is it going to take me???!!!! I'm 6 months out! I need a string on my finger, or a note written on my "eating hand" to remind me! Something. I feel like an idiot when it keeps happening!

Hey I had a fill on Thursday, my second one. I was back on solids yesterday, made a big roast beef dinner for the family...got my plate. 3-4oz Protein and a few spoonfuls of the sides...I barely got 3 oz of the beed in and slimed...and got stuck, the worst since being banded in August. Stopped eating walked around and it felt better.

I slimmed for the very very first time and don't want that ever again ugg...later on had some Sip a Soup and went to bed.

Today will eat mushies. And try solids tomorrow slowly.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
