B12 Shortage

Recommended Posts

Hi there! I am 6 months post-op (down 52 pounds!!) and I have found out that I am B12 defiencent..big time! I took my supplements, but I still have the tell-tale sign with the red stripe down my tongue, dizziness and very tired. I feel like the only person out there that ended up this way and I actually feel guilty! I know that my sound strange, but now I'm afraid. Has/Is anyone else going through this right now and have any advice for me? I haven't gone to the doc yet, but I have a feeling that I may be going soon for B12 shots?? I'd appreciate anyone's experiences. Thanks!!:)

I havent experienced that yet....I actually just went to the mirror to look at my tongue just in case. My op was on 8/27 so maybe it is too early?

BTW,...i am taking the Centrum Cardio Multivitamin/multimineral which lowers my cholesterol as well and has a good B12 content. My MD said it was OK to continue taking this.

Which B12 are you taking? Problably they are not dissolving properly in your system and you just flushing them........I'll stay away from anything other than Centrum specially away from those Vitamins you can get at Wallmart/Sam's/Costco, etc.....

I'm not banded yet, but I have been giving myself inter-muscular B-12 shots for 5 years. Actually, my husband gives me the shot in my deltoid muscle.

My doctor gives me a 1 year refillable script plus needles. It's covered by most insurances. I take two shots weekly.

Ask your gastro or primary care doc to write you a script. Considering that you are B-12 deficient, your doc shouldn't have issue with the request.

You can get sublingual B12 in large doses. I have 5000 mcg. They dissolve under the tongue.

What are the different ways that people take their b-12? Anyone just curious.

i get a monthly shot by my OB, she also offers a patch - but i just rather a shot & get it over with, than to have to fuss with pills/sprays/or patch.< /p>

I have tasted the b-12 sublingual from Bariatric Advantage, its pretty good, im scared of needles. What kind of liquids for b-12 are out there and what do they taste like?

i'm really not sure. i'm not a good pill taker, and wasn't prior to banding. i get shots vs taking medication at all cost. hopefully someone will chime in w/another alternative...

I take in the morning, TriVita sublingual B-12 (which includes B-6 and Folic Acid) ~ it's a very small tablet that dissolves under the tongue and GREAT flavor...like a mixed berry. I believe they still have the strawberry and Cinnamon too and they are just as good. You can view their website at www.trivita.com.

Hope this helps!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
