Did anyone weigh in pre op vs post op ???

Recommended Posts

I weighed in the morning before I had surgery and the next day when I got home using the same scale. OMG I went up 9lbs after the surgery? Someone told me it could be from all the sodium and Fluid from the IVs but I can;t imagine 9lbs!

And if I'm right it wouldn't be air causing it because that is weightless right?

Any thoughts?

Hi. Don't panic. I gained too after my surgery. It took me about 3 or 4 days to get back to where I was at on my surgery day - and I was only eating Clear Liquids. Don't weigh for a few days. It is not an accurate reading right now - give your poor body time to get over the shock of the surgery and by then you will be over the shock of the "gain". I was weighing all the time for a week or two but now I've decided that only weighing once a week is best for me. Good luck to you. Hope you are feeling and healing well!!!! Becky

It's ok you have a lot of Fluid after surgery . and a lot of swelling i am sure that's the answer to you weight gain. You will began to lose that as the days go by . so keep a chin up . Lynnlynn

Yes, your retaining liquid, your full of medications, and you are most definately swollen and will be for several days to a few weeks. Please don't stress yourself with the worry of a number on a scale right now.

I know it is tempting to jump on the scale, but I would say, have someone hide it for you for at least a week, even two, then get on and be pleasantly surprised! Good luck, get some rest now, your healing for the next few weeks you should have no other concerns right now.

It is also from the gas they put in you to expand the area where they had to put the probs in to see what they were doing. Did you kind of taste and or smell your breath the same evening of your surgery? It tasted funny to me besides the dryness from the breathing tube they put down your throat.

lynnlynn you might want to start another thread for this....

but I suggest asking your surgeon.

OMG--- I did the same thing as you and broke down. Ok... the pain meds didn't help the situation at all (not exactly in the right frame of mind to see the scale go up like 8 lbs). I refused to weigh myself for like 4 days and voila! I was down all that post surgery "weight" plus another 2 lbs. I am now holding steady and haven't lost any more but I have my first fill in like 5 days-- And that can't come quick enough for me. Take a shower-- sip your broth and look foward to the day you are done with Jello forever....

Don't worry, it is very normal. I came out of surgery 5 pounds heavier than I went in. It is the swelling and the fluids from surgery. This to shall pass.

I knew it was going to happen but was still shocked to see how much. (10 lbs.) Plus it took me more like 5 days to drop it all. I was an unhappy puppy for a while there.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
