Nothing tastes the same...

Recommended Posts

Ever since I found out I was getting surgery food just doesnt taste the same. Its all bland! Soda is not sweet, candy is not sweet, fast food taste like grease and fat. I like it because its making me think "if this stuff tastes so bad, i wont miss it!" I wonder if its just a big mental game or what. Anyone else have this happen?

I did but I also changed my diet to have more Protein and less carbs and I think eating carbs makes you crave them.

I think thats more mental...if you know that you're on your way to help yourself than your mind is trying to help you make that transition by making you taste with your eyes just as much as your taste buds...if that makes any sense...It's really good if soda tastes bad now because that and carbonated drinks are no nos with a band :) good luck

I haven't had a change with my taste but I haven't been as hungry or snacking as much since I found out my surgery is this month. I also haven't been drinking with my meals and I have noticed It doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. I don't know why I'm having these changes but I'm not complaining. It just shows me I CAN do this.

I am not sure if it is mental. I think it is more chemical. I was unfilled for 6 weeks and those things that I refused to eat when I was full like McD fries tasted ok again. Now, I gag at the smell again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
