PB/Slime/Stuck?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am a newbie to this site and just lost my band and am convinced that the vertical sleeve is my next best option. I am writing to inquire of the "sleeved" about their experiences with pbing, sliming or food getting stuck? Is this real? If so, is it similar to the band experience? How long does it take to pass? What are suggestive tips to get the food to move along since "being too tight" and getting an unfill isnt an option? Please advise. Thanks!

Sheena

I'm only 3+ weeks out but just starting on mushies and still eating too fast. I'm really bad about eating fast and about paying attention.

What happens to me is that I get a pain in my breast bone. Once I had to barf up a bit to feel comfortable. The rest of the time, I just stop eating and the feeling fades. I get it while drinking too because I keep forgetting and drinking too fast. But obviously liquid doesn't get "stuck". :)

Keep in mind, there is no stoma with the sleeve like there is with a band. That means food doesn't really get "stuck" or at least that much. It can be painful and you can get "foamies" if you eat too much or too fast, but it's not exactly the same as when a piece of food just won't go down because it's too big to pass through the band's stoma.

When I was looking into both, one of the things that struck me was how many banded people had trouble with all sorts of foods compared to how many sleeved people had trouble. Most sleeve people can eat anything, or almost anything, once they get past the first 6-12 months.

Ohhhh my goodness, the two do not compare! ;o)

A band is verrry hard, a sleeve is a piece of cake.

I do not PB, PBing is a band term and not a sleeve term. Sliming... it can happen but you have been banded so you have already been through the chewing and eating learning curve so I doubt you'll experience this. Folks who were previously banded have few if any problems with barfing, sliming, or foaming. We already know how to eat. You don't have a stoma for food to pass through, you just have a little tiny stomach. Big, huge, mega difference.

A sleeve isn't even close to banding, it is a completely different world.

There is no being too tight, you are suggesting banding. Sleeves are very different. Let me explain it this way, having a sleeve is like before you ever had WLS to begin with, you just get full faster.

Life is freak'en good with a sleeve! I regret banding, I do not regret being sleeved.

lol, ditto...I really need to learn how to slow down.

EVERYONE does! Everyone across the board. I'm going to go out on a limb and say without exception EVERYONE needs to learn to slow down. It's a learning curve. Those that were banded and revised to a sleeve have advantages that newbie sleeves don't have. We already went through the chewing learning curve.

What you are experiencing is completely and totally normal. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

It may be normal but it freaking HURTS sometimes!!

Though today I measured right and when I was done with my Soup with cottage cheese, I didn't hurt and my nose felt runny. I was in HEAVEN!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
