NSAIDS caused problem

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I have been here in a LONG time. I was banded in 2006 and never had any real problems other than things getting stuck once in awhile because I tend to try to eat things I shouldn't sometimes...My bad!

Last week I strained my back and took 600mg ibuprofen for two days (I believe it was Saturday and Monday nights). Then Tuesday every time I try to eat, I would get about 3 bites down and throw it up. It felt like it was stuck. Also when drinking liquids, it felt like it was going through a funnel. Supper was the same, I didn't think too much of it at the time because I have had days that are just bad like that. But Wed was the same thing...now I am starting to worry. :bored:Thurs, same...Called my surgeon and they got me in right away and did a barium swallow. The band is "perfect" he says! Well now I am not only worried but confused. :)

After some talking, we have come to the conclusion that the ibuprofen was a BIG no-no. It likely stayed above the band (because it is so big) and desolved slowly there irritating my stomach and that is why I am having this problem. But they didn't give me any idea how to solve the problem.

Today is Friday, I have the same issues going on so I called my regular doctor and can't get to her until Monday. I am guessing at this point we are dealing with an ulcer of some kind because if I try to eat acidy food, it will not stay down...I even have a little bit of a hard time with fruity yogurt. My plan at this time is to get through the weekend - as long as I can still get liquids down, I'll be ok and Monday, if this is still an issue, I need to get into doc again.

Have any of you had a experience like this or heard of such a thing? If so, do you have any advice for home treatment?

Thank You - Dee

I was told from the get go no NSAIDS are to be taken with the band. Probably for that exact reason you're having issues for. I'm sorry if you weren't told the same thing at the time. When I take something for pain I have to take something liquid or chewable.< /p>

Have you tried taking something to coat your stomach such as Pepto just to help settle it a little? I know you said you can't keep much down but, a teaspoon at a time maybe?

Hope you feel better soon!

Dee,

I hope you have found a resolution for this already.

I was banded in 2002 and had a slippage earlier this year which I just got fixed. However, my original surgeon didn't tell me not to take NSAIDS, so I would take tylenol or advil or midol, whatever was best suited to solve my problem, without taking the band into account.

Obviously I won't be taking NSAIDs anyMORE, just in case, but I don't think they were the cause of my band slippage.

I think that your stomach is probably very very swollen, if the band is placed right and you were able to get barium down. Were I in your position, I'd be pushing for an unfill and staying on liquids till you get unfilled, and for a few days after. See if the problems go away a few days after an unfill?

Good luck,

Jenny

My doc takes a moderate view on NSAID's, as people really do need them sometimes. But there's people around who pop ibuprofen for every headache, its bad for EVERYONE's stomach, not just bandsters.

I really really try not to. Once or twice since banding my back has been so sore that I have, but I wash it through with TONS of Water.

Motrin comes in a liquid too...it should pass through your band and not irritate your stomach as much as the pill sitting in your pouch. My surgeon says "NO pills at all" so I bought all of my Tylenol and other meds as liquids. My prescription meds are crushed. Any other prescription meds I get as a liquid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
