Surgery mid-way through 200+ lb weight loss?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have more than 200 pounds to lose and I am just getting started but I was wondering if anyone who is on a *long* weight loss journey like me has ever had some plastic surgery done somewhere mid-way through the weight loss period? The reason I ask is because I have always had a very significant "apron", and after two pregnancies it has only gotten worse. I am constantly battling yeast infections down there, and it makes it challenging to exercise because no matter what kind of undergarments I wear (and choices are slim at my weight), I bounce all over the place.

Now I was banded only a month ago and I haven't lost that much weight yet. I know this is only going to get worse as I lose more weight. I imagine that by the time I lose weight down to my goal weight, my apron will be down to my knees! (gross thought). So I was wondering if it would make sense to get a Tummy Tuck or pannenectomy (whatever it is called when they cut off the apron) sooner, and then go for a full body lift when I get to my final goal weight. (notice I said, when, not if! gotta keep a positive attitude!)

I know this seems like I am getting way ahead of myself, but if I thought I could get PS sooner I think it would help keep me motivated...

Hi Future,

If you have a plastic surgeon picked out, I don't think it would hurt to get a consult/plan going. He/she may say you need to wait a while, but at least you will have a plan in place.

My PS likes her patient's to at least at the plateau stage, but I think is varies. I had breast reduction surgery after losing 80 lbs. in June. I am plateaud right now, but still am about 30 to 40 lbs. from goal, but my large breasts were just too much for me to bear and were keeping me from getting out there and exercising, so she agreed to do it.

I think it just depends on the PS, but I don't see any problem with going for a consult if you feel that the apron is going to get in your way.

My understanding is that it is not uncommon for a ps who specializes in bariatric ps to do a panniculectomy (get rid of the the apron only) in the middle of weight loss for exactly the reasons you express.

I don't know how much you need to lose first, and I wouldn't bother going to a ps who doesn't know a lot about bariatric ps or bariatric issues. I noticed you posted on Dr. Shulman's thread as well - he will be able to give you an expert opinion.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
