Almost 1 mo post op--

Recommended Posts

:confused_smile:Hello-- I am very new to this. I am about 3 1/2 weeks out and not scheduled for my fill until 10/30. My husband had surgery 1 week before I did. He's doing GREAT!! No problems. No nausea. No vomiting. He's lost about 30 pounds so far. I've lost about 23, but have had more issues. Haven't thrown up any, but still having some in my upper abdomen (not sharp pain, more discomfort) and having episodes of nausea, and the gas is HORRIBLE. I just thought maybe I could chat with some normal people and not just my husband who appears to be superman! Somebody please just tell me this gets better. I'm kinda scared of my first fill if it gets worse than this.

Hello Susan,

Congratulations! First things first...men have different metabolism(s) from women so don't put your self on the road to comparison in the weight loss category.

As far as the discomforts...When does it occur? Is it constant? Is it relieved by change of position?

I had a large esophogeal hernia repaired as a part of my surgery and I swear it made my life a little more miserable than the average bear. It took me longer to get the sipping/swallowing mechanism back in check and even now (I was banded on 9/22/08) I get pains of discomfort in my chest and right side if I swallow too much fluids at any one time.

It is going to be a personal journey for everyone. I frequent another board that is a bit smaller than this one and the story is the same in that everyones experience is totally different. Some people lose lots of weight in the short term other take a little more time but patience is the key.

Do you have to/Have you returned to work yet? I find that the more active I am the better I feel everyday. My biggest issue right now is this port. And I am sure that in time the site will be less sensitive and all will be well in the band world.

1dirextor@gmail.com if you wanna dialog about this some more.

Thanks so much for your response. Sorry I didn't post for so long. These last few weeks have been pretty miserable. Today however, I am at home 4 days post-op from having my gall bladder out. Apparently that was the issue. My band is fine and causing no problems, but the tons of tiny gall stones forming in my gall bladder were causing excruciating pain and nausea. I am really looking forward to getting back to work and proceeding with my weight loss. I can't see anything standing in my way now. (And yes, my husband is still doing great although his weight loss has slowed down.) Thanks so much for your encouragement!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
