Raleigh, NC, and United Healthcare

Recommended Posts

Hi all! This is my first post.

I recently learned--quite by accident!--that my insurance company covers lapband surgery. I meet all the criteria the provider, United Healthcare, set to qualify for them to cover the cost of surgery.

Anyone on the forum have experience with United Healthcare in NC and coverage?

I am in Charlotte, NC and also have United Healthcare. So far they have been great. I completed all of he pre-work my surgeon required and his office submited my paperwork on the 13th and was approved on the 21st, but it took a week or so to get the letter from them, which is what my doc. needed to schedule me.

My plan with UH, requires a 5 year weight history, as recorded by a physician (1 weight record in each of the past 5 years), a 35 BMI with co-morbidities..got those in spades!, or a 40+ BMI with no co-morbidities. My plan does not require a weight managemnt program prior.

I hope you have the luck I did with UH!

Neugene - thanks for this info! I hope it goes as smoothly for me too.

lfoss - I attended an information session last night at Dr. Moran's office here in Raleigh. He seemed very knowledgable and I know for sure my plan lists him as a participating physician. There is another Dr. in Raleigh, in the Cary area, but he is not listed on United Healthcare.

Dr. Moran's nurse said United takes about 30 days for approval once all requirements are met.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
