Congrats to all the December bandsters. We are all on the road to a better, healthier lifestyle. My birthday is Monday and my upcoming surgery (Dec 9th) could not be a better gift. I have not started any pre surgery diet. I meet with the surgery coordinator tomorrow. I am guessing from you are writing, I am going to have to drink something not so tasteful. I guess I will know tomorrow. :)

This is really real....it is hitting me now. I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. The doctor said I can have some turkey and food on Thanksgiving and "enjoy myself" so he says. My date is 12/3....i am starting to get nervous.

I'm getting banded on December 5. I am getting nervous at this point. Any advise?

Hiya! I am being banded on Dec. 5th also! Really I don't see this as any reason for any of us to be nervous. This operation is performed daily by so many surgeons. There is minimul cutting and damage done to our bodies. Remember they are not cutting any organs in our bodies. The recovery time is quick. In most cases this is an out patient operation. Looking at that and reminding yourself of that should help ease your nerves.

Also remember that this is something you are doing to better yourself and your life. Yes this is a huge change but it is one that is managable. It is one that is controllable. Your life will never be the same afterwards.

So be ready to enjoy life!!! :)

At least 3 of us have that date. I will be in at 7am and probably discharged the evening of the 18th. I'll probably have my wife bring the laptop and post if I'm up to it that 2nd evening. I guess I'm lucky, I'm not required to do the pre-op diet. I did lose 8 pounds during the nuitrition classes.

Hey! I want to go to Mexico so bad....but I am only 40-50 overweight...everyone says Mexico is nasty and not to do it. ?????

It amazes me the amount of people who talk about Mexico who have never been there. Granted I have not yet been to Mexico but I have done my research and I have talked to peopel whom have. First off I will be going to Mexico next Thursday, Dec. 4th, 2008 for surgery on Dec. 5th from Dr. Pedro Kuri. In February of 2005 a close aunt of mine went to Dr. Kuri for the exact same procedure and she to this day praises him, his staff, and the facility. She has been a huge success on this surgery of course because she made it work for her. Recently a tv station in Sacremento, CA did a news article on the good and the bad on "Medical Tourism". In the news article they specifically used examples of good and bad surgeons in Mexico. It just so happens that Dr. Kuri was shown as their good example. They show the hospital that he works at, his staff, him, and even interview a patient of his. The main point of the news article is to tell people if you are going to go to Mexico or outside of the USA for medical treatment to do your homework ahead of time. I will be sure to be reporting back in here after my surgery to let others know how it went.

Here is the news article: cbs13.com - Video Library

Also here is Dr. Kuri's website: Lap Band Surgery - Dr. Kuri & Associates

Having read about so many of you doing this, I asked my surgeon about it and he kind of echoed what Pete said that research is vital and that with insurance and American medical costs it is easy to understand why people would do this. His other concern, which prompted my previous question to Pete was the type of band used and to make sure it can be filled back here in the states. He did related a story of a man who got fills in the US and didn't notice any restriction. Turned out the surgeon only put in the fill port and no band at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
