Vitamin d defiency

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I just got all my preop labs back and I have a Vitamin D defiency. Anyone had this? I am supposed to start taking Vitamin d/calcium supplement twice a day for the next two weeks. Then have it rechecked. My surgery is 2 weeks from tomorrow. This won't affect it right?:w00t:

Nope, don't worry, it won't affect your surgery at all. I also had a Vitamin D deficiency and they didn't retest until after my surgery -- two months after actually. My levels are good now but I still take Calcium tablets with Vitamin D added. My surgeon says that a lot of overweight people have a Vitamin D deficiency.

Now would be a great time to try the chewables you will need post op. I use Twin Labs calcium citrate with Magnesium and D (60 wafer bottle--4 a day dose) available at Vitacost.com for $7.67 each, $4.99 shipping for any size order. I order about 5 bottles (plus Twin Labs liquid Fish Oil for my Omega 3s) so I only have to order every 2 months and it all comes for $4.99. I actually paid $17.99 for it in a Healthy Options store, so this is a great price. You can also try Bariatric Advantage (bariatricadvantage.com) for their Calcium Citrate. I am pretty sure it comes with D. Citrate is the better form of calcium (absorbs better than carbonate) and the Vitamin D should be D3 or cholocalciferol.

Hi there!

I had the same thing...my Vitamin d is low at 9.9 (normal is between 32 - 100).

My bariatric surgeon called in all my medications since my surgery date is 10/13/08 and he added a vitamin d supplement.

World Health Organization reccomends everyone have 5600 units of Vitamin D per week. Basically...you can get the majority of this by spending a half hour in the sunshine each day.....otherwise, plenty of supplements out there that aren't even RX. Vitamin D is responsible for helping your body absorb Calcium.< /p>

You can also spend 15mins. in the sun 3 times a week. (This is what they recommend for children, so it couldn't hurt adults!) That will help with your Vitamin D replenishment. That's how our body makes it naturally.

But, I take a Calcium + D supplement daily, too. Sam's club has big bottles that are relatively cheap in comparison. I get all my supplements there.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
