I had my first fill yesterday - and got scolded

Recommended Posts

I had my first post-op appointments with my dietician and surgeon yesterday in Richmond. I had to bring my food diary with me for the dietician to look over. I knew I had made a couple of poor food choices - which she pointed out and then she said she wasn't going to scold me. I had eaten a Protein bar on a couple of occasions which she didn't like, plus I had eaten a hotdog bun and chow mein and fried rice.

Then I saw my surgeon - the dietician had already filled him in on my food diary. So although she didn't scold me, he did. I told him I had lost 17 lbs since the surgery. I did get a fill - wasn't bad at all. He said I had 1 cc in the band already and he added 3 cc - so now I have a total of 4 cc in my 10cc band.

I don't go back to see them for 3 months, but I have to have some blood work before then. I am on Clear liquids until this afternoon and then on soft food for another 24 hours.

I'm glad your first fill went well. I'm sorry you got scolded. I don't know why they expect us to suddenly turn into perfect eaters! Being a perfect eater isn't what got us here in the first place!

I go for my first fill this afternoon. I'm not sure I'm looking forward to seeing my surgeon again! The last 2 times I saw him, he wasn't happy with what I lost even though I was following the rules (he wanted more!). The last time, all he said was don't gain. Well, I've continued to lose until last week. He'd better not give me any grief! And he'd better frickin' be on time this time! (The 2 times I've seen him, I've had to wait almost an hour each time! WITH my 2yr old in tow!) Ok, deep breath!

let me know how it goes. I agree, I don't know why they have to be so negative. Being a little encouraging would go a lot further.

Ha! I got scolded too! Must be something they teach in Surgeons School!! LOL!

I fessed up that I'm still sipping a little Water with my meals. I get so dry that it gets hard to eat. He also doesn't want me using Protein drinks AT ALL!! liquid calories and they don't hold you for long, according to him. I usually have one, and not that often at all, when I'm not really wanting food but need to get some nutrition in b/c it's been awhile. He still said no. I have to say that I'm going against him on this one. I usually don't want food in the AM, so I might drink a shake if I just can't make myself eat. Then have lunch at, well, lunchtime! I'll watch it though. If I notice I'm getting hungry too soon or not losing, then I'll take another look at it.

He had given me 1.5cc in my 10cc band at the time of surgery and since I had really good restriction up until just last week (I'm 6 weeks out), he gave me another 1.5cc for a total of 3cc. The fill went fine. Appt. went well, he was happy with my 12lb loss since surgery (I weighed in at 198 on their scale). Later though, I felt sick to my stomach! For a good hour after. He said to eat normal but go slow and if I had problems with my regular food to go back to soft foods. A couple of hours later had a few bites of food and then felt like I was going to bring it back up again! Felt all wrong! I'm so not interested in food tonight. Haven't had much. I'll do a shake in the AM and see what I feel like at lunch. Don't know that I'm going to do regular food though. We'll see.

I am really surprised at how against the shakes he is. Kind of threw me. I figured I'd be on liquids for a couple of days, like most others. Anyway.

How are you feeling now that it's been some time since your fill? Are you still on liquids? Do you FEEL anything? I'm not feeling anything, other than a little sick once in awhile. Oh and the gas is back with a vengeance. I don't EVEN understand that one!! I feel no hunger, no stomach, no nothing. Almost like after surgery with the anesthesia! I FELT nothing in my abdomen for awhile. Strange.

Let me know how you're doing!

It must be me, but I would refuse to have that sort of accountability to a nutritionist or doctor, it offends me! I am an adult and responsible for my own choices and any type of weight control program which treated me as a child wouldnt get my custom.

What are you supposed to do, make perfect choices every day for the rest of your life?

I think they need a dose of reality! I bet neither the surgeon or the nutritionist eat perfectly all thetime either. You've lost weight, you've decreased your calories and markedly improved your diet, but you're a human being, not a robot! Sheesh.

I too felt sick to my stomach for about an hour after the fill and my legs were a little shaky. I did Clear Liquids for 24 hours and am back to my semi-soft diet again starting today. I had 2 scrambled eggs for dinner last night and they went down okay. My doctor/program also says absolutely no Protein Drinks or Protein Bars. I had a couple Protein drinks during my full liquid stage as I was starving, but I didn't write them down on my food diary. What I learned from this is not to write everything down. As long as I am losing, I don't need the grief.

Oh Jacqui, I agree with you (again!). I think it's ridiculous the way they get all superior on us. Like we don't know how to eat or follow the rules. For a lot of us, we do know what to do, we dieted our way up to these weights! If it REALLY bothers me, I say something but for the most part, I listen, tell them what they want to hear and then forget it.

Mom, glad to hear you're feeling better. I'm still a little queasy this AM after my shake. I just think I'm too sensitive. I also take a long time to heal. I won't let it go past Friday if I'm still not feeling right. Yesterday took a lot out of me, we did a Target run and shopping at Trader Joe's right after my appt. I totally did NOT take it easy. I really think that's what I'm paying for now. I'll keep quiet today and go easy with soft foods and see how things go by tomorrow.

I had my first fill yesterday and all went well. I was on clear liquids for most of the day but got really hungry in the evening so ate some SF pudding. Today I had coffee and a Protein shake, just didn't want to eat anything. But about an hour ago, I got really hungry and the only thing at my desk was pumpkins seeds---they went down with no problems. I didn't get scolded this visit but the last time I saw the nut, she looked over my log and changed my calorie and Protein counts (which I had taken directly off the product's label--but whatever). Then she told me that while she was sure that I needed a fill (this was 4 weeks post op) I couldn't have one until 7 weeks therefore I needed to do a better job at keeping the calorie intake to 500 cal a day. I thought, yeah, right. I tried my best but usually took in about 800 a day. It was the best I could do. C'mon 500 calories--now really!!! Fortunately, I don't see her for another month.

Everyone sounds like they are doing well....keep up the good work, folks!

On the bright side it’s nice that they are actively involved with you. Trying to teach you the tools necessary to be successful in the long term..

I hate being scolded to. I tend to pretend to listen lol.

I guess I really need to be thankful I have a good doctor. He has never scolded me. Generally I am a rule follower and he said we expect people to cheat. He also told me he wants to know how food goes down if I drink while I eat b/c this is a sign that there is no restriction at all. I love my Protein Shakes for Breakfast and after my workouts. My doctor is fine with it and even said it's a good source of Protein to start your day.

Oh my gosh, I think it's so crazy how everyone's doctor is different. I've never seen a nutritionist and my doctor said to have 3 meals a day and no Snacks. That's IT! I eat EVERYTHING! I haven't had my first fill yet cause when I went the doctor said that I was losing weight and didn't need one. I definitely need it now, I'm only losing like one pound a week.

Oh well. I kind of wish that the doctor would give me a little more direction like your doctors.

You don't go back for 3 months?? I have a 10 cc band. Was banded Aug. 4th. I have 5cc's in band now, I go this Wednesday for 3rd fill. Seems a long time without a fill to me. Will your Dr give you a fill sooner if you need it?

You're not kidding. The view on Protein in Australia is polar opposite to the view in the States. Most nutritionists and surgeons here would tell you to stop being so faddish, and eat normally, that there's no extra need for Protein after WLS and that wholegrain, low GI carbs are healthy foods. I've never heard of anyone here being advised to have Proteins shakes at any time other than the presurgery liquid diet and post surgery for the first week or two.

Actually on my second ever visit when I booked my surgery, the surgeon asked me if I had any questions and I mentioned I'd found a great online community. He said, let me guess, high protein, low carb? I said yes. He said be careful of believing what you read on the internet, so obviously he disagrees with it.

Yet, a whole country full of Americans losing weight cant be any more wrong than a whole country full of Australians, can it? Who knows? I think you need a healthy dose of self belief and confidence in your own decisions in this game.

Jacqui, sometimes I feel like I'm stalking you! I almost always agree with what you say! LOL!

quote - "I think you need a healthy dose of self belief and confidence in your own decisions in this game." - quote

My surgeon wants full, 100% Protein, nothing else, for the first 3 months. After that it drops about 5% every 3 months til you're a year out. That doesn't seem healthy to me AT ALL. I mostly eat Protein and if it's going to be some time between meals and I'm hungry, I'll have a small, all protein, snack to get me through (which is against the rules!). BUT I've already added back veggies and a little bit of fruit. We get a box of organics from a local farm every week and it about made me crazy to fix all this wonderful, healthy, fabulous tasting veggies for my family and not have some myself. After my six weeks of programed diet, I started adding it back in. I'm so much happier and probably healthier!

Sheesh! I thought I was a rule follower but it's looking more and more like I'm a rule breaker! Oh and I'm still drinking w/my meals. I haven't noticed a difference, for me, so I still do it.

I think that I've actually gained since my first fill. I go for my 2nd one tomorrow. I plan to manipulate the entire process by not taking my diuretic meds so that I'll have a little edema, drinking like a fiend which will stick since I won't have taken the meds, and having a "heavy" Breakfast so that my gain looks even bigger. I want that man to fill 'er all the way up, you know?

I've told myself that it is gonna take 5 fills until things get closer. Might not be true but at least I won't get my hopes up to high for the 2nd one. I'm just full of being "full of it", huh? :tongue2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
