Lost my band - forever

Recommended Posts

:crying:I had some pain and a fever on Friday night so I went to the hospital where my band was implanted. After hours of testing, they disovered that the band had eroded through my stomach and I had to have emergency surgery to have it removed. I'm soooo disappointed. It's like losing a friend.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that. I hope you can continue to lose weight without it. It's hard I know. Can they replace it at some time? Hope you recover soon.

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've had. I also had my band removed suddenly. I lost about the same amount of weight that you have and I am now happy to say I have been maintaining my weight for the past few months. Walking has been a life saver for me. Both to maintain my weight and for just feeling better in general.

I know exactly how you are feeling right now (devasted, hurt finances, worried about gaining the weight back and the pain of going through a second surgery). You are probably feeling depressed, which the anesthesia can exacerbate.

I can say I felt all those things, but today I am feeling better about it all (except for the financial loss).

Feel free to PM me, if you have any questions.

So how long did you have the band? I just assumed it took years for it to erode????

Also, how did they remove it? Did they have to cut you?

I had the band since Feb 2008. They cut me - multiple incisions. I still have a drain coming out of one of them -OUCH. It only took me about 8 months for it to erode through my stomach.

Which band did you have?

I'm so sorry to hear that. Did you have any symptoms prior to the fever and pain? Any difficulty swallowing or anything at all? How devastating for you. I had my band in March of this year and would be truly traumatized to lose it at this point. Again I am so sorry

How are you feeling today? Better I hope.

I'm curious which band and how much fill you had in it. Were you placed on a special diet for your stomach after they removed the band?

I also wonder what tests they did when you went in that Friday and which test was it that determined the band was eroded.

I only had my band eight months as well.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
