I hate liwuids...can I start on purees sooner than 1 wk?

Recommended Posts

(Ummm, pardon my misspelling of liquids...it is not liwuids, LOL!)

I was banded on the 4th. I have been so sick of liquids lately. The hunger that I get sometimes just doesn't get satisfied with the dang liquids...so yeah, I have resorted to baby food. Tomato Soup concoction with baby macaroni and cheese or baby meat puree with broth to Water it down. It just feels a little more hearty than broth. I still can only have about 2 oz of the stuff, but discovering something different is well worth it for me. Baby food has been a savior. The first doctor that I went to basically said, "if it pours...it's yours, so I have been going by that rule. I had baby chicken and rice (Gerber's stage 2) with some garlic salt and after I heated it...it poured, so I felt like it was alright to eat. Was that wrong? there were no chunks in it at all...totally smooth.

Can I start on puree if it goes down? I really am SO over liquids!

The short answer is: NO (I'm going on all the information you have provided in your post).

The long answer is: PLEASE ask your Dr. There are reasons why we are put on a post op diet. This period for healing and the more liquid the food you eat the less "work" your stomach has to do to digest it. liquid is much more easily digested by your stomach than mushies/purees and they are much easier than solids, hence why you progress through the stages while you are healing. Different Dr's have different post op diet requirements.

Other people might respond and say its ok by their Dr's rules. But you need to follow the rules of YOUR Dr and seek his/her advice on this. That is the best way to deal with this. Tell them everything you wrote here and they will be able to guide you.

Good luck!

My doctor only had me do 3 days of liquids, but I had to do mushys for 4 weeks. I got so tired of mushys lol. I couldnt wait to eat regular food and bread and salads again.

I think those who stay on liquids lose more weight.

I was told at my pre-op appt that there are two big indicators of whether the lap band is going to be successful for an individual. One is the ability to give up carbonated beverages. The other is the ability to stick with the pre-op and post-op diet schedules. Those who don't usually end up with band complications or do not reach goal/stop losing.

I would follow what your doctor says and just get through it. If someone had told us a year ago that we could have the body we hope for but had to have liquids only for six weeks, we'd have jumped on the chance.

this is not for a lifetime - just remember that - your body needs to adjust to the change - and your mind also - you will be moving faster than you think up the diet chain!

Let your body heal - be kind to it - it has just been cut on pulled and tugged on ... lol

It's like being a baby - you gotta crawl before you walk!

Just keep up the good work!

This is a question that ONLY your doctor can really answer. The quick answer is NO because the reason for the liquid diet is for your stomach to heal with the band around it. If the healing is not done correctly, you are more at risk for band slips and complications. Call you doctor before making any diet changes that you are not scheduled for.

like most others have said

LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR

the post op diet is for healing not to torture you. you made a major lifestyle commitment, the post op is only for a few weeks. let your band heal and follow your doc's instructions.

good luck

If you talk to your doctor, he/she may be OK with what you are doing . . . the key is to discuss it to make sure it is OK. I agree with everyone else, unless the doctor says it is OK don't do it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
