I think I'm in trouble

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for next Thursday. I just got off the phone with the pre-admission nurse who was asking me my history. He ask if I have sleep apnea and I said yes. He ask if I have a machine...I told a white lie and said yes. He said make sure you bring it with you. The doctor who would prescribe the machine is booked 3 weeks out. My surgery is next week. What if I "forget" it at home, which is nearly 3 hours away from my the surgery facility, will they cancel my surgery or will they loan me a machine? I hate lying but if I needed an emergency surgery would they say "sorry you dont have your cpap machine".

I am 4 days without eating. I am a little moody and cranky. I just dont want to go through all of this and be told, too bad!!

Anyone have a situation like this? What did you do?

I would just call back and say you don't have one or just say it when you get there. I really don't think it will jeopardize your surgery.

I don't understand the need for the "white lie." Does it make a difference as to whether you do or do not have a machine?

I HATE white lies. I honestly believe in karma but I don't understand why this machine is such a big deal. I just spoke to my husband and his uncle has one that he doesn't use. I may "borrow" it for a couple of days!!! I know what setting I'm required so this may be a good fix for my problem.

That will work perfect. You might want to give it a practice run, lol. I am not sure I would know what to do with it. It might even help you to rest a little easier post-surgery when you really need it the most.

Perhaps this will be your only time ever using a machine. Soon you will be melting away and things like sleep apnea either lesson or dissappear altogether. Banding is the best thing I ever did for myself . . . and I hope soon you will be feeling the same way :0)

I have a machine and the nurse at the hospital asked me did I have one and I told her yes. She said bring it. Well I forgot mine and left it at home. Once I arrived at the hospital I was never asked about it. You can borrow one just to be safe but I wouldn't bring it up unless they asked. Good luck.

It mattered in my case. No CPAP, no surgery.

In our orientation (Kaiser) they said if you have sleep apnea and are not treating it with a CPAP there is a chance that your muscles will clamp on the breathing tube and they would have to put you in ICU until they released. So if we had been diagnosed with sleep apnea we had to have our CPAP.

It doesn't sound like all hospitals are as strict though.

I had my surgery on Aug.27, 2008 and I have sleepapnea. I was told to bring my machine to the hospital also. They didn't use it but I was told that when I got home I had to keep it on the rest of the day and that night.

The hospital told me to bring my cpap machine with me, but to leave it in the car. They never actually asked me about on surgery day.

You can't set the machine yourself to your own setting. You have to take it to the medical supplier for them to set it for you, so I don't think borrowing one to actually use would work. I would just call back and say you misunderstood, that you don't have a machine and be honest about it.

Kaiser usually wants you to be on your machine for 2 months prior to surgery. Yes, they require you to bring your machine. Also, it is my understanding that each machine is set differently. Call your hospital and fess up. Tell them the truth and see if they can work with you. They may reschedule your surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
