Hello, Brand New, Just got insurance approval

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm brand new and just got insurance approval. Apparently it takes longer for the letter to get to my doctors office. I have no idea what to expect now. I would appreciate any info on what test are generally done preop and how long it takes to actually have the surgery once you get approved. Thanks to all in advance :)

first of all, congrats! i just had my surgery on 9/26 so i am new at this too. the only tests i had to have were pregnancy test, upper gi and regular labwork. the upper gi is not pleasant but it does not hurt. they give you some alka seltzer tasting stuff and say to swallow it and try not to burp and then they give you the barium to drink. it is nasty, i am not going to lie, but you get throught it. they just take pictures while you are in different postitions and have you lie down and turn over several times. it does not take long. some have to take other tests depending on age and health condition. I also had to have a psyche evaluation and a nutrition class prior to surgery. also, the surgery is not all that bad or it wasn't for me. i had never had surgery and am 48 years old. it was nothing like i expected. congrats and if you have any questions, just let me know.:crying:

CONGRATS!!! I think a lot depends on how busy your surgen is. Mine was so quick. I was banded 9-25. They gave me my date 2 wks before surgery & the same day I was approved!!! For my pre-op they just gave me a physical, filled out more med history stuff, more blood work. Good luck! keep us posted!!!!

Thanks for the info. I had to have the psych eval and nutrition visit before I even submitted my paperwork to the insurance company. I did not expect to get approval so fast. I'm a nurse but when it comes to stuff with myself I'm not, I'm a patient. I'm actually a bit nervous. Glad to hear you did so well.:w00t:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
