Ok, I am Brendon. I am a police officer and I weight 300 pounds...I am not sure if I will qualify for lapband, but I did measure my BMI, which is 43. Can anyone tell me how I would qualify for the surgery or not. Thank you much!

Hello,

You should go and talk to a surgeon who does this type of surgery or look on line for a information session in your area. Best of luck to you. Insurance companies also have their own standards which vary from company to company, most suregons have specialists on staff to assist you with those issues.

excess weighrt must be hard on a police officer, just like it is on a 325 pound firefighter.Having to get new bunker gear yearly because I kept getting bigger and bigger was all it took to realize i need to lose weight.Im now down 70 pounds in eight months and doing much better. If you are able to pull this off you will not be sorry.best of luck to you on your journey.I would start by going to a siminar and let the surgeons staff guide you through the process with the insurance company. If you have to self pay they can also give you info on financing if you need it.

The NIH guidelines say BMI of 40 or above with no co-morbidities. Most insurance companies follow the NIH guidelines on this. So I think you qualify.

(standard "all insurance companies are different" disclaimer goes here.)

I would call your family doctor or insurance company and ask them what they require. I am a dispatcher for LEA and we have a few different insurance companies and each has different requirements for approval.

Hi, I just got the Realize band this past Thursday. My BMI at that time was 41 (6 foot tall, 307 pounds) WITH co-morbidities. I have high blood pressure and depression. I also did self-pay because I didn't want the insurance company to play games with me. Best $15,000.00 I ever spent

(so far! :tongue2:) on something.

I think it would be best to go to a seminar or two and see if it is something you could do and see if you find a surgeon you mesh with. It is a completely different way of eating and I have found sometimes that it can be depressing (I am still on the liquid phase of the diet, so this is only why I say this). But, would I do it again based on everything I have experienced up to this point? Hell yes! I am so glad to know that I have a tool that will help me to not only lose weight, but to keep it off permanently. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!

Hi

I am the wife of a police officer and was banded on 9-8, my first step was with my primary care doctor. I asked if my HMO insurance would cover banding, and was shocked that they did. I got a referral to a Bariatric surgeon. That was on June 10th, so things really went pretty fast for me. Also, since then my husband decided he wanted to be banded, his bmi was 39.8. We just got word on Friday that he was APPROVED. I really don't think you will have a problem being approved. Just get the ball rolling! Good Luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
