2nd Fill & a bit discouraged...

Recommended Posts

 Well I had my 2nd fill yesterday. It was 1cc... so the doctor tells me that I'm at 3 cc's now and I'm not going to have much more room for fills. While I was there we also discussed my portion sizes, because at my 1st fill he told me I should be eating an "egg-size" portion. Well, I've really tried, but I usually can eat like 2 or 3 times that amount! He told me that I shouldn't eat until I feel full... that I should only put the alotted serving size on my plate and only eat that!! And then he said that basically if I don't change my portions that this surgery isn't going to work the way it's supposed to work! So now I'm questioning myself. Was this surgery was right for me? I was under the impression that the band was supposed to make me feel fuller? I know I have the psychological stuff to deal with .... eyes bigger than the stomach type thing, but I feel like I've made big changes as far as that goes.... I don't eat in between meals! and I don't drink with meals! And I haven't even had ONE sip of soda (of any kind!) since a few weeks before my surgery! I dunno... I guess I'll have to work harder! I've come this far! And spent this much money!!

It is frustrating isn't it? I have had two fills and can eat much more than I am supposed to. But your doctor is right, we need to work hard at this and try to control portions. As my doc says, the band is only 10%, I need to do the other 90%. Hang in there. There will be struggles, from what I hear as we get more fills it will get easier.

as you get fills you will eat less and feel fuller longer. It wasn't until my 4th fill that i knew what that meant.....hang in there and make good choices especially when you eat too much.....good luck

I was feeling exactly the same way. I had surgery 3/20/08 and have felt basically no change until last month it was my 5th fill. I just had my 6th fill yesterday and may need to return to have some removed, I cant keep anything down yet, but is only the 2nd day. Anyway, my Dr. explained to me that each person is very different. The layer of your stomache lining is different thickness which means some people with thick lining will fill quickly, thin will take much more. I now have 6.5cc and he said it can take 14cc in the band. (May be different bands) Don't get discouraged there is still hope. And it will happen, just have to find your fill amount that works for your body. When it does happen you will certainly know, you will for sure be able to tell the difference, but take it slow because too much of a fill is not comfortable at all. Good luck to you.

Iv had two fills too, and am not tight enough to have enough restriction to stop me from eating anything and everything. So far its like a regular diet to me too, with a teensy amount of restriction finally.

Im assuming as the fills make us tighter this will get easier, or I hope so anyway.

Some have said on average it takes 3 fills to have enough restriction to help much with appetite. Im debating when to set up that 3rd fill!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
