Hi Newbie Here from Maryland, have many ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, my name is Cindy and Im from Glen Burnie, Maryland. I have been thinking about doing the lap band. My insurance will pay for most of it. I have quite a few questions.

1) I have several health problems. I have had two open heart surgeries and I have pacemaker. My cardiologists and I have discussed this and he believes this surgery would be best (less invasive) and would help me considerably. I am always out of breath and tired out. He believes alot of it has to do with my weight. He believes this would help that situation and my heart as well. I have also been diagnosed with some slight apnea (which is caused from the weight).

2) I am wondering if any knows if the above would be considered a good reason for the surgery and if I would have to do that 6 mo diet thing before the surgery.

3) I did Weight Watchers for 1 1/2 years and lost 25 lbs and gained it all plus some back while still on WW. I just recently stop going... Should I go back or wait until I go for a consult with the surgeon. (Dr. Averbach is who I am thinking about going to).

4) How long were you out of work? I have read anywhere from 4 days to several weeks. Unfortunately I cant afford more than 1 week.

5) What do you go through after the surgery? Was it alot of pain?

6) I have figured my bmi to be roughly around 39.4... I am 5'5" weigh 238 lbs.

Well, that is all I can think of for now. I really want to do this and I am scared to death. I am afraid I will fail at another attempt. I am hoping enough weight comes off in the beginning that my energy changes and I can get into exercising.

I will be back after I go to the seminar which should be next month.

Thanks in advance for all the answers to my questions, and keep up the good work for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Some of your questions just depend on your insurance. About going back to WW, some surgeons want you to lose a certain amount of weight and they base it based on your weight at the time you have your consult. So you probably don't want to lose weight before then because you want every pound to count towards your pre-op requirement.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
